Just sayin' that paying a fair wage isn't the end of the world.
OK, I am feeling myself a bit acid today, so here we go...
One of the problems on give such kind of raise is that it is like a chain reaction. If a parcel of workers get it soon all the unions will start a movement to get a proportional enhancement. I think that the bigger problem overall is not the fact to have a minimum wage but keep people receiving it for the life. Instead to raise the value of the hourly wage the government should obligate ALL companies to have a career plan and so all the employees would be raised as they get better at their duties (beside of course the in-house time). It would force people to get better as employee and human beings. I think that you should earn depending on what you desserve. Currently (and since 10 years ago) I work online for an an USA company that has an yearly sallary revision depending on the employee past year.
By the other hand, I already was an employer myself once and I know how is to be at the other side. Mostly of employees (normally the dumb-asses ooga-ooga non-specialized ones) think that the boss is a millionaire that is getting rich thanks to their exploration. Such people just wants to ask for more and more money but they rarely wants to be a better employee. And no matter how much money you give to them, they will want more. I remember when I owned a printshop years ago and had constant losses because wrong printing, machines broken because misuse, etc, that is, the employee thinks that the boss is mounted on a pile of money but they (the employees) don't give a shit for the company and its problems and losses.
Even being screwed by the employees, I remember that at that time I used to pay better than my competitors and also share part of the company profits monthly with the team.
Looking back today, the conclusion I get is that pay more won't bring any benefit for certain kind of workers. Neither for themselves neither for the company. For themselves because at the end of the day they still will be stupids ooga-oogas that waste their money with BS. My mom has always taught me that much more important than how much you EARN is how much you SPEND. The Math is simple. And for the company because a higher wage doesn't make an employee better or happier. So, why pay more?
