D 112 on vocal

This week, I've been using a D112 on vocals. Sounds pretty good.

I've had it for a few months but only ever used it on djembe. I guess the thing to do when you get a new mic is try it on *everything* and see what it's got to say for itself.
 
BTDT -- Very dark-ish, but you want a mic you can absolutely kill, that's the one.
 
I have one sitting in my bass drum. Never even crossed my mind to try it on anything else. But I probably should, if only for the sake of doing it.
 
Use whatever works.

The biggest problem these days is no one is willing to experiment....

Interestingly, an SM58 is pretty effective on double bass, electric bass and guitar amps and shloberry harmonica ! Even on congas and bass drum but hopeless on snare.
 
Don't under-estimate what all you can do with an SM-58.

Hmmm...an SM58 is just an SM57 with a ball cover. It should work just fine on a snare. People use SM57 on snare all the time around here.

Darkish, yeah, but it works on my voice. I love the detail I get on my voice with the AT 4050, but it surprises me how the dynamic sm7b often sounds just as good or better. So I'm starting to think that maybe my voice does better with less detail. Can't see the zits.

Disclosure: when I use the D112 on vocal, I've got a ribbon room mic too, which adds some depth. But not much more upper end.

That's what I've generally thought. On the occasions I used it though, I never liked it. Which is odd because it was grand on the congas. Far better than any condensers I have. Even more odd because it does guitar amps very nicely.
 
I've heard that Kim Deal used a D112 for vocals on the album last splash.
 
Not just me, then. I've got to play with it more, but I get the impression that the sound changes off-axis more than my other mics. Which is cool, actually.
 
The off axis response is pretty odd. I believe kick mics are often designed to become more omni directional in the lower frequencies. On my last recording I used the D112 on floor tom which sounded great. The bleed sounded pretty weird because of the off axis response but once I did some gentle low passing it sounded quite nice. It actually picked up a decent amount of the rack tom which was cool.

Have you ever used an SM57 on a snare? Maybe your SM58 was defective.
 
I have never used my D112 on vocal, but I have used my old D12 on vocals when trying to get an old style vocal sound and it was good.

Would you believe, I've never ever used an SM57 ? Not once. When I bought the 58, it was a straight choice between the two and I chose the 58 because I wasn't really happy with the mics I had at the time for vocals. A little while before I heard that there was almost no difference between the two, I had begun experimenting with the 58 on other things like the bass amp, the guitar amp and various percussion instruments and liked the results. For some reason, I just never liked the snare sound with it. There wasn't anything inherently wrong with the sound. I just didn't like it. I got better sounds with the Behringer and the Superlux. I do like the 58 though.
