PureMix / Sonnox Mixing Contest!

Maybe I wasn't too far off when I suggested it would take a month or two to judge. There were probably more submissions than originally prepared for.

If i did a mix of this even tho its too late i can post it here for reviews?

Yes, you can still post your mix here for review.

Thanks for the reply :D

Here is my second mix, my first one wasn't really convincing to me, im unsure of the vocal choice i've done and some panning and reverb choices too, maybe it sounds too far away?

Did some automation here and there but mainly its EQ, COMP and PAN i tryed working from top to bottom instead of bottom to top (Started from Master, then groups, then tracks)

All reviews greatly appreciated even bashing,
Thanks.

EDIT : Since the contest is over i took the liberty to edit some parts, its visible but nothing major really just cut the blank a little before the strong finish

Hi everybody. Was wondering if winners were chosen yet, apparently not. I'd love to get some reactions on my version of the mix, as I am a young-just-out-of-school sound "engineer"/technician/whatever. I'm currently not looking for a job in the music industry as I think I don't have the talent and the determination to do it, but I appreciate mixing music on my spare time, without job's pressure.

So here is my version, I'd be happy to read your thoughts about it. I'm not really proud of it, but I'm happy to think I did what I could with my little knowledge and hardware and I am satisfied by the result. It is far from the original one in terms of artistic decisions, mine is way more "natural" sounding with a lot less reverb and effects on voices.

nice mix overall but sometimes the kick seems to takeover the other instruments a little too much, not sure about the kick sound either but that's just taste. Otherwise than that the dynamic of the chorus could a little punchier than the rest other than the sub synth

Congratulations to all the winners. Nice mixes. Interesting that they are all different in their approaches once you get into the vocals.

Also, well done to the judges listening to over 800 mixes ... what a mammoth task ...

Looking forward to the next contest ... hope to come better than 5th, or was it 799???

Cheers all,

Rob

who were the winners? I never got an email??

Since I've heard much better mixes of this track than the winners (both in this thread and elsewhere) I'd reckon that pay2win policy (or Pensados Place Policy as I call it) has finally made it to the competition area....?
I could be wrong though. Maybe the winners haven't given any money in form of being customers and/or users on this forum/puremix - maybe muddy, boxy mixes with obvious phase issues and way too much sub for a track in that genre is what puremix aims for? Or maybe they just choose the tracks which where most like the original mix ... Jesus fucking Christ.

Grats to the winners though - Jornarilds mix fits my ears best out of the 4 winners.

My mix (page 41) was NOT like the original mix. I took a gamble on mixing it outside of the box. (Not to be confused with OTB or ITB)

I agree !

I'd reckon that pay2win policy (or Pensados Place Policy as I call it) has finally made it to the competition area....?
I don´t agree ! Due to personal experience ! I bought ALL of the Puremix videos and I didn´t win ;-)

I didn´t participate in this mix contest with the goal to win.
Havin´ this in mind, I really don´t arouse the suspicion to be a sore loser :)
I think I did break the rules and this made me noncompetitive anyway.
I provided a new approach and recorded in my studio some drums and percussion parts, because the existing ones didn´t convice me at all !

As a professional mixing/mastering engineer, the four winner mixes (congrats anyway) didn´t convince me neither ...
they´re all very close to the original.
Was that really the goal ? Isn´t it more interesting to listen to new approaches and CREATIVITY ???

I assumed more ability to judge professionalism and creativity here.
But what are they saying in buddhism ?
"Don´t expect anything, so you won´t be disappointed !" :)

I dont think they listened to all 800 mixes. Imagine that !
I would have to take a break of 17 weeks after that ...

Nonetheless here´s my approach https://soundcloud.com/hybridrums/anadigiintractableremix

Any comments are appreciated :)
