This is the third one in my solo project, all written/sang/performed by myself. Let me know what you guys think! I'm not sure if the mix is missing low-end components or not, it's hard for me to tell.

The drums are a bit mechanical, your getting a machine gun effect from the snare. The bass is indistinct, in some places it doesn't sound like as much time was spent on it as was the guitars, like it doesn't keep up with the guitar parts. Vocals sound really good, good recording, good performance, good mix.

Overall its a pretty kickin tune. I think you could spend some more time on the bass and drums, but the main idea comes across as it is.
Thanks for sharing it.

I thought the drums were too busy and too robotic personally. The beat that came in for the solo, around 2:20, sounded much better than the drums before and after it. They got old very quickly. Bass is MIA for me.

Guitars sounded good and the vocals really shine in this. Nice and clear, good tone and delivery.

I totally agree with PDP. Spend some more time on the drums and the bass and you'll have this one in the bag. I personally believe the rhythm section in the most important part of any band/song. Get that as best you can first and foremost.

:thumbs up:

Does anyone have opinions on using electronic drums? I would like to get set up to blend in a real kit with samples, but I'm not there yet money-wise. Big interfaces + lots of mics are expensive. Currently I'm using Superior Drummer's Avatar kit. Anyone else have experience on making fake drums sound less... fake?

I enjoyed listening to this. I did think the bass drum was a little too loud. I'm going to check back and see what others have to say about drum programming because I've got the same problem.

Real drums are the way to go if you can, but a lot of us have to get by with programs, I agree you need more gear and a good space to record real drums, and a good drummer.

I think the most important thing to remember when your programming drums are the limitations that a real drummer has, put a lot of variation in the beat and in the velocity. One of the best ways to learn programming is from a drummer, they make the best programmers themselves since they know how real drums are played. In other words, think like a drummer.

It takes time. In your tune for example you could mix 2 or 3 different snare sounds (add the side stick in some places) and change velocities during those repeated parts. Start the roll softer and increase the velocity. It means a lot of time editing, but anything worth doing requires work.

You have a lot of things working for you here. Your voice is great and the whole vocal track(s) is really well done. You certainly know how to mix LOUD lol. The guitars sound good for the song.

The things that need some work are the drums as you are already aware. Did you program them all from scratch or did you use the beats already created for you? If you programmed them thats impressive. You just need to spend more time trying vary the velocity to make them sound more natural. I use Studio Drummer and it has a tightness knob that you can easily use to loosen up the beat so its not so rigid, you should see if yours has something similar.

I really have to listen for the bass and I find the guitar is too loud so evening out those would help imo.

Nice job though, you got the hardest thing down with the vocals being where they are.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those are some good ideas and I'm going to give them a shot tomorrow.

I am really happy with the vocals and guitars. Hopefully sometime this week I should have real bass added in, and I agree with you ^^ about the guitars being a bit overpowering. The whole mix could use some low-end.

As far as the drums, I did program all of it myself. I think that adjusting velocities here and there will help tons, and Cubase I believe has some "humanizing" functions I need to look into more. I appreciate the feedback, thank you all so much!
