Excellent job bro!

Well. I am ashamed to admit mixing this many tracks completely overloaded my old system. I actually had to render my mixes to listen to each set of changes I made, it was a VERY long process. I have never mixed this many tracks before, and my gear is limited to the stock plug-ins that come with Studio One Pro, (the old Windows XP version not the latest one). Having made all those excuses, I really did enjoy mixing this tune, it has a cool vibe. Someday soon when I have gotten rid of all this 10 year old junk and upgraded to some gear that has much more power, I think I will go back and remix this one just for the fun of it. Good Luck All..!

Hi Guys,
I know a lot of you commented about how the 89 tracks +you're added busses + all the plug-in, etc. that you have to add to do your mix, really push your computers hard! And some even to their limits! So I just wanted to let you guys know that, since the "SSD" drives have really came down in price, that is the one thing that seemed to help boost my computer the most! Even you guys with older computers and don't want to go the expense of a new computer, would be surprised at how much it will help your computer when pushing it with tracks and plug-ins, by just adding a "SSD" drive as your "OS" and programs only drive. I will never go back to anything other than a SSD for my OS and programs again. It really made that big of a difference. Of course you do have to have enough memory, but when I added 8GB of memory to the 8GB that I had already, I could not see any difference in my computer at all! But, when I dropped in a SSD drive, it made a world of difference. Now, I only paid less than $90.00 for a 120 GB SSD drive and you might think, that is a really small drive for and editing computer, but you only install your OS and programs only on this drive. And you'll be surprised how many programs with your OS you can put on it. Just remember to never save or down load files to this drive. I even saw a 120GB SSD Hybrid drive that also has a 1TB HD drive in one 2 1/2" drive case for less than $200.00, prefect for a lap top. Or cheaper yet, just get the 120 GB SSD in your lap top and get a USB case to put the original drive in to use it though a USB port. Just be ware not all SSD drive are the same, and just because it costs more doesn't mean it is faster. Always check the specs. You want read and write speeds at least close to 500MBps or more. So especially you guys with older or slower computers might want to conceder this easy upgrade to prolong the life of your computer. Even your faster newer computers will see a good increase by doing this. I have an i7 quad w/hyper thread, so windows 7 sees an 8 core that runs at 3.5 and turbo to 3.9 GHz and the SSD drive still did a lot for me.
I had no problems working with all the stems and I use Adobe Audition CS6. Hope this helps some of you guys.

Then you didn't make very wise use of the RAM you added. When I added 8 GB of memory to the 8 GB I already had, I made a 3.5 GB RAM drive and put the project tracks in it. It made a world of difference without having to buy an SSD (disk is not an easy upgrade with my 2009 iMac).

Hello there !

I just finished my mix and uploaded it on soundcloud,

Focal Solo 6
MacPro Quad 2009
MOTU ultralite MK2
Mackie Control
Logic Pro X
and some plugs like waves SSL (on voices ...)

I really enjoyed doing this, I hope more contests will come soon. I'm happy to discover this forum too.

Have a great day !

Hi Some Guy
I'm only a "PC" guy myself, never gotten in to an IMacs before. Now, I have built a lot of computers before, including the one I have now, and have done a lot of things with them, but I've never heard about making a drive out of part of your ram memory. Is this just a Mac thing or can any PC do it? If so, you think if I did a web search on it I'll be able to find how to do this on a PC? Very interesting, would like to check this out. Thanks for letting me know about this.
And your right putting project files in memory, Ram or SSD, dose help a lot. I actually use two SSD drive in my PC, One for OS and programs and the other for the project files that I'm working on at that time. The difference would be that you're not getting the benefits of having your OS and your Logic Pro 9, which also holds all of your plug-ins, held in memory, as in SSD drive. Of course, you could load Logic Pro in your memory, but you would have the hassle of it being gone every time you shut down you Mac, so you would have to reinstall it every time you boot your Mac. I think having your Program with all of its plug-in held in memory is where you would help your computer the most and of course, saving all of the session files in memory too.
Of course, like you say, one would have to conceder the cost and work involved in an SSD upgrade in an older IMac, which I know nothing of.

Thanks about that Ram Drive tip, very interesting!

Hi there! Here's my take on this FABulous production!

htps://soundcloud.com/juan-pablo-ordonez/amber-skye-howlin

Mix process:

- Mixed in Cubase 5
- Used Stock EQ mainly and some stock compressors. Most of the mix was done using Waves plugins.
- A big portion of the time I spent searching for a "phat", punchy, warm bass sound on the synth bass and kick layers. Got very close to the sound I was looking for using the EMI Drive on the NLS plugin from waves.
- All the mix is going through NLS on EMI setting on the master bus, and vocals going through Neve setting where I pushed the drive knob quite a bit.
- Spent a LOT of time carving out of frequencies, using LPFs and HPFs, removing mud and masking, trying to open space for all the tracks, especially to let the vocals sit in the mix and be able to listen to all the words without too much effort.
- For the BEAT Track, which contained the main acoustic sounding drum beat, I was able to bring out a bigger and fuller sound using a CLA on Room settings, and a lot of compression. Also used parallel compression on another Kick track that sounded acoustic (had ''room'' tone on it), and that helped to add some thickness on the Chorus sections.
- On Guitars, used parallel processing on the high end (the pick sound) using the many tone shaper to help them poke out.
- Vocals on Chorus sections had quite a bit of Drive on Ssl setting and passing through a C6.
- The Dog FX track, almost got me! The NLS plugin was adding harmonics on the master bus, and then suddenly I could hear the tone!
- The lead Vocal wasn't too hard to mix, but I had to focus on some the ''eee's'' and the ''uuu's'', they poked out of the mix sometimes, so I had to carve out those frequencies on certain sections only.
- Used MAnny Delays and H-Delays, plus the One Knob Wetter on the tracks that required ambience.
- Played around with automation on sends, also changing reverbs and delays on different parts of the song.
- Did a lot of subtractive EQ on all the synth parts and processed a couple of them with stereo enhancers.
- My computer was about to explode with all those tracks!

Overall, I enjoyed mixing this song TOO MUCH ! Thanks to the Puremix Team and especially to Fab Dupont for this amazing production. Thanks also to Amber Skye for allowing us to mess around with her song! Good luck to everyone!

Cheers !

Congratulations gozmozis, I wish you the best for you and your familiy :)

Thanks fco.aguilarm! My son seems already like to be in the studio so maybe he´s gonna be a producer in the future :-)

Nice song!

This is my first time mixing a pro recorded song, thanks for the opportunity to homerecording and puremix.

I uploaded my mix to the puremix cloud.

It was mixed in the box, using Harrison Mixbus demo with no plugins (vst).
I use it to try the software but its emulation of the Harrison console sounds nice (I recommend it).
The compressor, limiter and tape saturation are native of the emulated console.

mix2.webp

It was mixed using a TC Desktop Konnect 6, Beyerdynamic 880DT 600Ohm Premium
and a 2.1 desktop speakers for pleasure. I have no monitors ;) yet.

I wanted to use Reaper (my actual DAW), but my PC is pretty old to handle so many tracks and it was just stable with HM.
I used Reaper to fade out the mix and to export it to mp3.

Having just a couple of hours to mix it, I followed the Zen master advice, I did it
for fun and learning. And I had both of them.

The approach that I had in mind while mixing it was to sound in your face and organic.
I know that the master provided by puremix is a nice and clear NYC style, but I tried to do it a bit different, with the guitar and piano louder than some of the synthetized sounds.

Thanks again, and I hope you have a lot of fun too!

Frank
PS. If it is possible send greetings to the beautiful singer by me.
