Mixed all ITB in Pro Tools and a Lynx Aurora Convertor.

Monitored on Tannoy Active 8's and Yamaha NS10's.

Didn't use that many plugins. Waves SSL Channelstrip, L2 Limiter, Decapitator and transient designer on the drums, Oh Slate's Trigger for some drum room mic effect too, Fabfilter's Saturn on the bass and Slate's VTM on the Vocals and master buss along with FG-X for some volume.

Feel free to comment on my mix.
Any negative comment is accepted as long as it's done in good faith.

Thanks.

Hi everyone!

Mix uploaded on PureMix Cloud. File name: Amber Skye - Howlin (A. G. Voice Mix) [PureMix & Sonnox Mixing Contest]

A few words ...

I really enjoyed working on this mix.
Great song, great vocal and arrangement!

About my mix: I tried to make it a powerful, but accurate and balanced.

My technique was very simple: EQ (cleaned up the low end, added the some brightness), compression, some FX (reverb, delay, saturation etc).

You can hear the result here:

I used Cubase 6.5 and stock plugins, P&M V.I.P. Bundle and some free stuff (Melda Production, Tokyo Dawn, VladG Sound, Voxengo)

Big thanks for interesting contest!

And good luck to everyone!

Finally done with it. Was a ride.

One thing what i noticed that my rusty old Mac Pro (Early 2008) can take a quite a lot of heat.. still. This project had at least 150 plugins and still it performed well enough to finish the project.

Hell, i'm ready for next - it'll rock!

Hi Guys,
First, sorry for my poor English.
It was a great experience to mix this song. Made with Logic X on a 2013 Mac Book Pro and 3 types of interfaces (built in, mbox mini, presonus firestudio). No hardware used, only plugins. Monitoring with Presonus and M-Audio speakers. JVC and Ultrasone headphones. (in my car to)
My method :
- wanted to make the piano, the voices, the harp, smoother. (for example : leslie+disto on the piano)
- for the drums, i used gates to choose a type of snare hit in a single sequence
- tried to do some tonal equalization, for example for the fast hats.
- The verbs are not too long, i don't like much long verbs, except for effects.
- A brighter verb is used only for lead vocals
- Modified attack and envelop processing for the bass to mask a little the warping effect
- Softer attack for the first synth loop.
- The chorus acoustic guitars related synth are mixed in a stereo bus, with a fast stereo tremolo. I wanted make
single sound of it.

Built-in Logic plugins : compressor, expander, channel eq, enveloper, noise gate, multipressor, clip distortion, exciter, pitch shifter, Rotor cabinet, distortion II, sample delay, deesser, delay designer, space designer, tremolo,
stereo spread, adlimiter.
+ Molot compressor, Bark of dog.

Hi everyone,

Did you keep the dogFX in your mix ?
I did ... but I didn't know if it was a trap

I used stock plugins in Logic Pro X which I found rather difficult (for some reason I find it hard to dial in the eq and compressors in Logic vs using Cubase or waves plugins).
I used only stock plugins from Logic Pro 9 for mine (Page 27). It took me quite a while to get proficient with the Logic compressors. Hardest thing I found is that you have to really get it into your head that the metering and the numbers on the knobs are completely useless. (I have a hardware compressor like that, too.) Just use your ears to adjust and compare back-and-forth with bypass. Sounds easy but I found it does take practice to build up the confidence to truly totally ignore what you see with your eyes.

I couldn't hear the Dog FX on my monitors, and got used to not hearing it while mixing. I was surprised when I heard the mix in the truck and easily heard the Dog FX. Now I'm having to start second guessing my monitors.
Unless you're a dog, you shouldn't be able to hear it. It is outside the range of human hearing. Your monitors are accurate, your truck speakers are not. The sound you heard in the truck was distortion from overloading the tweeters.

Just finished mixing Howlin and submitted today. Great learning experience and lots of fun. My best mix so far as i just started mixing and tried new things. I used reason 7 with mostly stock plugins. Thanks puremix for the fun.

Hello everybody,

here is my mix. That was cool. I saw this more by coincidence, so i gave it a shot ;-)

I used Studio One 2.6 to mix this and I limited myself to just use Stock Plugins or Freeware Plugs. Exception: Klanghelm & GuitarRig/Little Reflektor

Stock Plugins:
  • FatChannel
  • Compressor
  • ProEQ
  • OpenAir
  • Limiter
  • Binaural Pan
  • BeatDelay
  • Chorus
  • Mixtool
  • Tricomp
  • X-Trem
Native Instruments:
  • GuitarRig with the Little Reflektor (love that verb!)
  • Supercharger
rest:
  • Klanghelm DC8C2
  • Klanghelm SDRR
  • Softube Saturation Knob
  • CamelCrush
  • George Yohng W1
  • TDR Labs Proximity
  • Airwindows Channel3, Density2 & Drive2

I do a lot of Gainstaging with the Klanghelm VUMT, but since you can't hear that thing anywhere, i didn't list it.

The Mastering Stage has a ProEQ, a nother DC8C2 and a Limiter going. I use SPAN…

Any Comments are welcome! Lot of great mixes here! ;-)

Kind Regards,
Jan

Just submitted as well and had a lot of fun mixing it! Great tracking!
What did you use for the vocal chain?

Mixed in Logic Pro X, with stock and 3rd party plugins. Had a hard time de-easing some of the vocals though.
Nice exercise overall.

That's my Vocal Chain for the Verse. It's a bit different on the other Vocal Tracks, but this is probably what you would want to see. ;-)
One thing you can't see on the screenshot is that the Comp in the Fatchannel is on too and knocks of 1-2 db with a fast attack & release and the soft knee. I am deessing with the presonus comp. It really does a great job!!!

Anyone here use any outboard gear?

Yes I do. OTB mix with SSL Matrix + some outboard for the more important tracks:

Kick: SSL E series eq + comp
Snare: SSL E series eq + comp
Beat: SSL stereo eq + Urei 1178
Main vocal: Millennia STT1 + Urei 1176
Bass: SSL E series eq + Dbx 160VU
Piano: SSL stereo eq
Guitars: SSL E series eq
SSL bus comp on the master bus.

Let me know what do you think, thanks! ;)

difficult to mix 64 tracks with protools 8
I Premixer drums and effects channels then integrate the 29 vocal tracks.
Then I wanted to have the best atmosphere between guitars and synth sound with my toys and my lexicon bundles.
I love Echoboy and Panman and my Focal CMS 40, I had fun!
My mac bookpro dual core 2 duo 2.5 ghz and my external hard drive worked hard!!
it was limited ...Capture d’écran 2014-05-31 à 19.42.46.webp
I forgot!
No SSL mixing console, just a sound card DigiRack
on the voices I used plug in waves API 550b and PUIG Child 660
I like Filter FREAK on synth
Pan Man on guitar vibe and arp
Multimaximiser L 316 on master mix

Just uploaded my mix! Awesome! I'm super excited. I used Pro Tools and used SSL 4000G+. Used on board SSL Compressor on drums such as kick. Also used EQ to bruce up the guitar tracks. Add a bit of high mid frequency on the piano to get those strong hits. EQ the FX to make some room for other instruments and vocals. As for the Vocals I used reverb and delay. I placed the delay to left side to create a cool effect. I used echoboy plugin and D-verb for reverb plugin. Also used SSL EQ and compressor to balance out the dynamics. I put some reverb on the chorus lead. I automated a delay effect to get fading echo of the last word on the chorus. Added some reverb to the prestack and bridge vocals. Not sure if I missed anything else but had an awesome time mixing it. I hope I'm one of the winners. Thanks and best wishes!

Anyone knows the exact time when the contest ends??? June 1st in France, Japan or US???
