Steenamaroo - Rough demo of new Pete song.

Hey all!
I received an an iphone recording of a new song from my pal Pete and thought some of you might enjoy tracking the progress.

We often work like this. He'll send me rough guitar and vocals from his phone and I'll make a rough first mix around it to gauge the potential.
I think it's probably a little bit slow and definitely needs moved up a few frets but, other than that I was pretty pleased with how this turned out.

There's maybe 3 hours put into this. All DI/vsts apart from vocals. Mixed on headphones.

All being well we should be starting into the proper recording very soon.

Haha! Definitely. This sounds pretty damn good as is to me mate. I really like it and will look forward to hearing where it goes from here.

I thought it sounded really good. Just a couple of things...

I thought the lead vocal was a little bit loud. I also thought it was just a bit harsh on a syllable here and there.

Other than that I thought it was really good.

Cool, thanks man. Yeah, I'm looking forward to hearing it with properly tracked vocals.
I was speaking to Pete there. He's going to send me the final arrangement tonight and I can get started on the real mix.
With any luck vocals should go down this weekend as planned. :)

I'll keep this up to date.
 
I think this is a good mix overall for a fake quicky. Vocals are a little too out front for me. I think the sounds do sound very canned though. It kind of sounds like it was done on a Casio keyboard. I'm sure that stuff will be addressed with a real mix.

It probably will be a lot more commercial and fake sounding than I'd want, but I have been thinking about it.
I was thinking about maybe replacing the shimmery pad sound with controlled feedback or something.
I'd like to come up with organic material but we'll see.

In truth I'm not really sure what will happen but I got the drums and bass laid out today so tomorrow will hold the answers. :)

Hey - why is that? Is that what Pete wants? Well, to hell with him! :p Wait, I guess he's kind of like a customer in this situation, or is it more of a partnership? You've done a ton of work together it seems.

Yeah, this sounds nice and full considering how it came about. I don't have any advice, although you're probably not needing any at this stage. I'd like to hear what you wind up doing with it if you care to post an update.

I didn't really word that well. Yeah, we're certainly a partnership and we're both 100% on board.
We try to up the ante with radio play with everything we make because, well, it does no harm and there's money in it.

I guess where where the teenage us wanted to play in a rock band, the older us is happy to admit that the words are this guy's strength and making the mixes pretty commercial doesn't really hurt anyone.

Having said that, I will be recording real bass and guitar amps. I've a hankering for that counting crows clean sound when the chorus comes in.

Coming up with the 'next big single' is kind of a running joke with us, an unrealistic as that is. :p

Should be updating pretty soon.
I've got this week to build up the final mix and friday/saturday to do vocals.
I'll be back!
 
Hey all.
Here's the first update.

This is the mix we're going to record vocals over. I've left a trace of the scratch vocal in there for reference, but it's very very low in there.
Pitch is up a full tone and the tempo is up a few BPM over the original demo.
The arrangement changed a little too.
Hope you enjoy. :)
 
Sounding good mate. I really like the breakdown part at 2:16. Looking forward to hearing more.
