If only for a moment.....
Do you feel there are any instrumental combinations that just don't sit well together ?
If so, can you give examples of the songs they're in ?

I don't think stylophone goes with anything.
I know Bowie used it in some old tracks (can't remember titles) and he definitely used it more recently in 'Slip Away'.

I just don't get it. He might as well have a bagpipe solo.

I think it turns up in "Space oddity".
It was a stupid instrument but oddly enough, it fits in really well on that song. I think it has a sound that some synthesizers have gone on to make and it came about in that period where early synths, mellotrons, claviolines and those keyboard instruments with sci~fi sounds were all the rage.
Most of them were used experimentally for a while then they seemed to disappear without a trace !

Flugelhorn and Piano - After the Gold Rush.
The first time I really listened to it, something seemed lopsided, missing almost. But I think the flugelhorn really works ! It's the timbre of Neil Young's voice in the song that I find borderline ~ just.
By the way, have you ever heard Prelude's acappella version of this song ? Very 1974 pop and lush but gorgeous

I'm a huge Bowie fan but I'd never given any time to the earliest records. I started with Hunky Dory and worked forward chronologically.
I listened to Space Oddity and a few others this week and just kinda sighed when I heard the stylophone.
Although I can accept that it would evoke an entirely different reaction when it was new.

Yeah, both grated on me at the start, but I've kinda got used to both now and love the song.
I still know it's wrong, though. ;)

Negative. I'll look for it now. :) Thanks.

For me "Hunky Dory" is still the classic peak of all things Bowie.
But some of his earlier stuff is fabulous. There's some wonderful songs on "Space Oddity" the album {it was once called "Man of words, man of music" or something like that}. Around 2000, I got a great CD out of the library called "Bowie at the Beeb" that had the songs from a gig he'd just done. Funnily enough, my wife and I had watched it and I remember being pleasantly surprized. But also on the CD were BBC sessions he'd done back in about 1968. Some of the songs on it like "In the heat of the morning", "London bye ta~ta", "Silly boy blue" and "Karma man" are bleedin' marvelous.

And this, especially for you.....Merry Christmas !

Cowbell and bassoon.

When I read the thread title the first thing I thought of was double reed instruments. I feel like they could potentially clash with many other instruments. I guess it's that I just don't really like the double reed sound, so in my head it clashes with everything. No examples, but I did find some interesting bassoon music on youtube when I went looking.

I watched that recently on youtube. Really REALLY enjoyed it.
There's something strangely awkward about Bowie live, these days at least, but I still love to listen to and watch him.

I was racking my brains trying to figure out why I know 'Heat of the morning' and 'Silly boy blue'.
Took me a while to realise they were re-recorded for the unreleased album 'Toy', of which I have a copy.
I don't know the originals, but that spurs me on to give them more time now.

Some of the songs on Toy made it through to the Heathen record; I guess the rest of Toy was made up of re-records. (Conversation Piece was another.)
Maybe that's why he scratched the project in the end. Who knows.

I read something last night saying that there were over 25 songs recorded for 'The Next Day' and that another 2013 album was conceivable.
Needless to say it didn't happen, but it gives hope for more activity in the near future.

Now all we need is for him to pull a few concerts in Belfast or Dublin and I'll be happy.

I was trying to think of something that sounded awful and in doing so thought of the opposite. A harp (harpsichord) & harp (harmonica). I never heard those two instruments played together, but I reckon it might be quite nice because they've got the same name.

I'm not a massive fan of violin with guitar, reminds me of two sisters fighting. It's not what I call awful, but I do find it kind of hard to relax when I'm listening to it.

An electric guitar with chorus effect and...
Any other instrument.

Example...the 1980's.

I must admit, both electric guitar and violin or acoustic guitar and violin are among my favourite combinations. Love them so much that a few years ago I looked for bands that employed that very combination and discovered the likes of the Flock, Curved air, String driven thing, Pavlov's dog, Salem hill and even Loose moose. Aside from old faves like Kansas, the Mahavishnu orchestra, It's a beautiful day, the Mothers of invention, David Rose, Spud, Jean Luc Ponty, Mushroom and Horslips, I loved the period that Bruce Cockburn used a violin in his band and don't even get me started on Celtic folk because if you think my posts can be a bit long..........:D

To be honest, I don't really view instruments like that. I think anything can go together instrumentally. But in the right context, because sometimes, even two electric guitars might not fit together.
Strangely though, I do find that certain voices just don't sit well together while some are like they are part of the same voice, they go together so well.

Because despite it's original design, it's versatile enough to do far more than mere word processing.

If the person with that in their sig thinks that computers were "designed to do word processing" then they're a sad puppy with not much grasp of reality.
