Hi I am new here. I been a musician all my life. I have cool ideas and want to get into home sound engineering and record my ideas where they sound good. I have m-audio and a yetti mic, 2 rokit monitors and an Alienware laptop. I also have many musical instruments. But to make the story shorter, I was looking into buying a yamaha mw 12 USB mixer but then thought of going cheaper and getting a behringer senyx USB but noticed they give you audacity which is free and I already use as well as fl studio. My question is: since I sample and record little parts at a time, do I even need a mixer board if I have the m-audio already? Thanks guys, any help would be awesome. I want to start creating but limit my choices and keep it simple rather than focus a lot of attention in gear stuff. Thank you

Forget the mixer man (IMO). If you really want to just record your creations and have limitless abilities after, just find a DAW that works for you and learn how to use it. Whether Reaper, Cubase, Studio One, etc...it don't really matter until you decide what works for you. It is about creating music. Not every software works for every one persons head. Try demos and make the decision yourself. Audacity is an editor. Worthy for some things but not at the level someone wishing to create a viable product would use. FL Studio is also not necessarily designed for audio recording, though I have heard some great music come from it.

It all comes down to what you are comfortable with. Free usually equates to limited. Reaper defies that in a way, because they are more of an open source company. The software is capable of most tasks that the 'big' software companies give, but it is also a different workflow than some are used to. $60 buys you a non professional license, but you don't get the ease of MIDI programming that you would with Cubase. You pay for what works for you. The way to find that out is to try them yourself.

Sorry if that sounds vague, but that is the reality. Even though I am a devoted Cubase user, I can not tell you what would be good for you. That would be unfair. At the least judgmental based on my personal experience. No individual can tell you what is right for you.

Try before you buy when possible. Most of us learn by spending money on the wrong thing. I have had many such times. Mostly software that I can't sell...

Thank you so much you are a life saver and I agree with everything you said. You seem to know your stuff and no not vague, very informative and to the point m. And thanks for pointing out reaper I will sure give it a shot. And will definitely check your site. Thanks a bunch Jimmy:)

Hey everybody reading,
I mix music on vinyl, CD's and Digitally. I also records sounds and make beats using a laptop with a beat pad and microphone.
Video games got me hooked on fun sounds. It's a hobby, I like to learn how other people operate and not learn on my own.
I play swing bounce dutch house trap step and phat-ass club beats.
I'm a shy emcee; I freeze up and have little confidence.

I'm looking of creative ideas, tips, tricks and advise as well as offering the same.
BUT Most important, hopefully a place to B.S. with like minds.

I also have a identity crisis. I lack an artist name and have no nick names or DJ name.
The last name I was given was DJ Buckwild while playing country and dance house at the Bar.

Hi everybody. I've been playing music for about 20 years, back to high school bands, and when my band of 10 years started slowing down due to having kids and other "we're not 20 year old punk kids with no responsibilities anymore" stuff, I decided it was finally time to start putting some energy into learning the basics of recording, and set up a small space in my house. That was probably 2 years ago, and I've been lurking this board for about 1 year and 364 days. Found a lot of good advice, and that will continue I'm sure. I figured it was time to actually become a member and possibly contribute or maybe ask some direct questions. I've been trying to gather "enough" bang for my buck gear to get to the point where I don't feel limited by physical capability - rather than by my expanding but limited knowledge. "Enough" is a finish line that keeps moving, I've realized.

I started playing music with guitar, but have played drums for the last 10 years. The goal when i started exploring recording was to be able to record real instruments by myself or with whomever was around - live drums, real amps, etc. I've gotten there, and now am continuing on the path of being psyched about every latest thing i've done....until I start the next thing and realize all of the things that are wrong with the last thing. Ha. Incremental improvement is the new operating philosophy.

Using Reaper, which I love. I have a Tascam M308 ($85 on CL), using mostly for the pres for drums so far - but I'm about to set it up to actually do some small scale mixing on, as a learning tool, to see how out of the box goes. I've probably read a few patchbay advice threads on here 20 times...and will read them a few more times when I start plugging stuff in.

Came up in the punk/hardcore scene of Boston (and suburbs). Raised on Dischord, Gravity, ebullition type bands, and have played loud shouty music in bands for the most part. But on my own I also love woody guthrie, bob dylan, john prine, johnny cash, and such and play a lot of acoustic music as well.

Nice to meet everyone as a poster, and not just a lurker.

Hi, My name is Andy I have been home recording for a few years now. I only came on here to get some info about a interface I have just bought. So I thought I'd beter drop by and say hello. I work very much to a [small] budget with a computer as my studio. Sometimes I actually come up with something you can listen to..

New Year's resolution to be more public with my music and recordings has brought me to finally register, though I've lurked here for many moons.

My early recording experience started with a simple cassette recorder in my teen years. In the 90's and early 00's I made various attempts at using Audacity and webcam-grade mics plugged directly into the mic port on the computer. A couple of years ago I had a brief stint with a Blue Snowflake USB mic (also into Audacity).

Currently (meaning for the past year or two) I select from a handful of cheaper dynamics (hello SM57) and condensors through a second-hand audio interface (hello Tascam US-122). I do most of my recoring/mixing in Studio One, though I'll launch Audacity from time to time. And, horribly, I'm mixing on headphones -- then double-checking everything in my car! So, my personal roadmap includes getting some monitors (thinking of some 8" models by any of the various current vendors who put those out) and DIY room treatment, though it may take me another several years to get there.

Newbie with VF160 issues seeking help.

Hi. Newbie here! Hi all. 56 yer old musician, ex-luthier, metal sculptor, photographer... I bought a VF160 and the inputs were inop. No peeking at full input gain and nothing registering on VU meter (I speak old school recording as this is my first venture into digi. so please bare with me). I had this fixed to the tune of $100.00. Was told it was a power supply issue and two teeny tiny little mini ICs (?) were replaced too. Happy dance! Run home and try recording. Unhappy dance (again)! Peeking lights working, levels on VU meter working (signal is now going in and recording) but volume in the headphones is VERY low. Tried hooking stereo outputs in back to a Teac reel to reel (that I EVENTUALLY want to mix down to for a warm analog feel ((I told you I was old school)) and hooked the phones to that and volume is still low (wanted to see if it was JUST the phones output). I worked all the sliders and pots back and forth and although a little scratchy not all too bad and I don't THINK this is my cause. I don't want to take it back to the guy who fixed the inputs as he had it for over a month and a half. I found two repair shops recommended by musician friends. One is an hour and a half away and the other charges $120.00 an hour (scary!!!) and is 45 minutes away. Any ideas on the cause and if so any leads for me to diagnose and possibly repair myself? I don't want to go too crazy with repair bills being more than another working unit would be on ebay but I feel I'm into it for $150.00 so far ... Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!
Rick
P.S. Just went down and tried again and this time records but NO output at the phones while recording nor playback. Woe is me!

Hey all, I'm Dave from Columbus Ohio. Been playing poorly since 1969. Always been a casual player. For some reason I started getting better recently. ??? At least I think I did.

Anyway, my friend and I are wanting to move a notch up in the food chain and after all these years, and start recording to improve our skills and later maybe play out somewhere someday. Mostly fantasy stuff. Having fun.

So, I've now a Zoom R8 on order. Looks a little better than my four track Fostex cassette recorder! It comes with Cubase LE, That should do at first I hope.

Mics... Ive a couple old Radio Shack Back Electret Mikes from the early eighties. They were rebranded Sony's and were supposedly a nice mic. I've ordered a couple XLR cables for it. Currently they are XLR on the mic to a Phone Jack.

Laptop is an Acer M583 with a i5 processor. It's new, and should work OK with the Zoom R8.

Also ordered some closed headphones. Should be good enough for multitracking.

Need to get some Studio Monitors. GC seems to always have something on sale and and I'll keep an eye on them.

Lastly a mic boom or two. That's low cost stuff. Maybe get some used at MGR.

So... What else am I missing?

Is there a reason you are working with this equipment? I mean, it is not like it is a classic (I don't think anyway) and there are other portastudios out there for what you probably already have in this machine. You might want to re-evaluate what you have and what you can purchase before you reach the before you reach, "Point of No Return" (unless you like Kansas ;) )

Newbie here! 20 years old, into House more than anything, listen to a lot of different genres but I'm fascinated by the production of House and DJing so that's my primary musical focus. Any other House guys on the forums? :D

Evidently I've been here a while. I signed up in January 2010, just before I died. After coming out of a 44 day coma, of course I'd forgotten I'd signed up.
I'm pretty much a secret musician. I just got a tascam dp008ex. I'm reading the manual but I have questions. Since this is for intros I'll leave it at that and ask else where.
Nice to be here....nice to be anywhere.

Hello hore recording people. :) My name is jigfresh (well not really, but for our sakes here) and I play guitar. Sometimes I like to sing a little, but it's not my strength. I've been playing for almost 25 years now. I've been recorded many times, but never recorded myself until recently. So far my experience has been running my Boss GT10 though my laptop running audacity. I'm looking to step up the home studio a bit so here I am. Thanks in advance for the help.
