Cannot get Audacity to pick up the signal from the AI

I just bought the Sonar Power Studio 250 audio interface and I'm trying to record an acoustic track through a mic. I have Audacity for a DAW and it's not picking up the signal from the AI. Any ideas.

Did you install the driver and then select it in Audacity?

Jim is correct here. Audacity is probably picking up the default input which is usually the internal sound card. It should give you a selection of input devices. Also note, Audacity does not support ASIO inputs. So you will have to choose from other support types other than ASIO input. For the record, ASIO drivers if provided by the hardware vendor, give much superior performance over the other driver types (latency).

You may want to look for another recording software. I don't consider Audacity a DAW, but it could easily be argued it is as it does allow recording of multiple tracks.

Yeah, download Reaper. Free to try and cheap to buy. Be ready for some reading and learning tho. Not just a basic recording program, but well worth the time.

Audacity defaults to "Microsoft Sound Mapper" (whatever TF that is!) .
To set a different device go>Edit>Preferences>Device and set the AI in the drop down for playback and record (then setup for 24bits and 44.1kHz).

But why are you not using the Sonar Cakewalk software that came with the AI?

I have Sonar X1 Essential and it works fine for audio recording. I just cannot get on with it for MIDI.

Dave.

OK, so I downloaded a free trial of Sonar and the ASIO driver. I've recorded something but I can't hear it on the playback with my headphones in the AI. I think I have the right settings within the Preferences dialog box. Am I missing something?
