Virtual guitar amps/analog guitar amps

This thread really should have ended on page one. There's not one single scenario in which a sim is better than a real amp for live use.

I completely agree. Most of this thread has been talking about top end valve amps vs sims but I would also much rather have a small transistor amp than a sim. In fact, most of the time I play live with a Sessionette 75. It's not the best sounding amplifier but it sounds quite good and it's INCREDIBLY reliable. Even if I could get a sim that sounded more like a good valve amp, I wouldn't want to use it. I want the amp behind me, I want control over it and I don't want the 'sound guy' messing with it. It might be okay to let some guy control your amp when you're playing a huge gig and the guy really knows what he's doing but most of the time, in my experience, you want to minimise what the guy at the desk has control over. And if you're playing a smaller venue without the amps mic'ed up, I think it sounds better not to have all the sound coming out your PA cabs.

As Greg said, I can't think of a single situation in which I'd rather use a sim. And I'm not even thinking that much about sound.

Just to play the devils' advocate ....... IF your live set consists of wildly divergent tones from song to song with way complicated fx set-ups for each song and you need maybe 20 or more of such complex presets then a sim might be better.

But not because it has better tones but just because of the ease of switching from one tone with a univibe/echo/chorus/fuzz/compression/treble booster to a different tone with ring modulator/octave/OD/flanger/arpegiator/whammy.

I'd still prefer to use all those things as hardware but on stage the switching would be way easier with a sim.

That's the only situation I can think of where a sim would be noticeably easier.

.
yes ............. it allows the audience to see/hear you more as a separate player.

Absolutely and totally wrong.....that's just YOUR opinion!!! And you know what opinions are like!!!

Heaven forbid somebody come up and tell you you've got a great sound when using a high quality processor, or sim, or whatever the hell you wanna call them!! That would be embarrassing wouldn't it? I've heard plenty of good effects processors used live and they've sounded great!! I guess when you play loud enough that your ears hurt all the time you probably lose some ability to tell the difference and have to have the amps cranked to 11 all the time??

Yes, that must be it. We all play cranked to 11 all the time. Even if that were true, 11 is still better than 1s and 0s.

Yep!! Just like I said dude....just your opinion!! Some guys play through those marshalls and sound like rank ass!! Some guys play through the processors and sound great!!! Keep banging your head!!!

Maybe.....but the the guys that play well, always sound better through amps! :p

Hey....HTF do you turn an iPhone up to 11? :laughings:

Always?? I don't think so. There's players out there that can make any processor/simulator sound better than your amps!! Sorry if you don't like that...but it's the truth. Some of the worst guitar sounds I've heard have come from tube amps (...and processors as well). Just all depends on the player and how well they can run their equipment. Just because you can't make it work don't mean others can't!! Don't knock them for it!:)

Lol. Yeah, let's all lower our standards for the useless fucks that can't sound good through a real amp.

That's fucking pitiful.

I don't think I'd call them useless fucks just because they don't want to play through a real amp. If they kick ass.......they kick ass!! No matter what they play through right?? Whether it's a real amp or, as you'd call it: 0101010101010101010101010101010's. Is it really lowering your standards....or is it just an image thing??
