well ..... further news 'bout the PicoValve ....... it won't do it with drumbs.
While it did very well for my solo gig in a smallish club setting ...... last night I tried to use it at a band rehearsal for an upcoming gig I have playing behind a local, monstrously good harp player ( one of the two best I have ever heard in my life and he mostly doesn't play blues thank God).
So it was at his house ..... bass/drumbs/guitar and the harp player/singer.
The volume was pretty moderate but the little Pico just had NO headroom at all. I could have cranked it but when I need it clean I NEED it clean and it just wouldn't even almost do it.
I actually had to stop things for a minute after the 3rd song so I could run to the truck and grab the Tiny Terror.

This is not a slam on the thing really ..... I like it and, for a cheapo, it's decent and I really think for someone with volume problems recording it'd serve well.
But clean ain't it's thing unlerss the volume is pretty low.
I actually stuck my DR-5 in front of it at last weeks gig so after tonights gig I may see if it came out well enough to post a clip.

lol ... I can't imagine for who ............ but there it is anyway ... I just felt like typing.
:D

Lol. No, for real. It's an actual review from actual experience from an actual person that we actually know. You just can't get better info than that! :D

I was thinking of tracking one down for myself to use with that dumb punk rock band so I don't have to drag my halfstack out to practices. But now, not so much....

oh hell no! It's only 5 watts.
I think you could probably get away with maybe 25 watts for that purpose.

Or I know where you can get a good deal on a Marshall single twelve combo that'll run at 25/50/100 watts! ;)

Yeah that little Krank 20 watt I posted about earlier will do it, but I don't like the sound of it. It's too metal lol.

You still got that Marshall huh? I'm telling ya man, put it up for sale at the Marshall forum. One of those suckas will buy it!

She says the money'll be gone and then I won't have anything plus, get this, I need a lot of different stuff so I can have the right amp for different gigs ............... pretty good wife I got.
:)

Congrats Greg!!!
V30's, T75's or what dude??? Really jealous over here man, for fuck's sake, it's hard for me to use my 1/15w amp with a 1x12, much less 8-12's.....Awesome!!!!

How much for the new cab btw??? I'm still saving up for the "big" amp, but I really haven't been putting much toward it lately to be honest, my Dad's health is going south pretty rapidly, & I'm afraid he won't be around much longer....I hope not, but I'm also trying to be realistic too...I'm afraid if something happens, my family might need a little $$$ to help 'em through, & of course, I'd do that before buying a guitar amp...Hell, I'd sell everything I have to help 'em if they needed it.....

Clips dude, post us some of your super Gerg-y clips!!!!! I almost posted something a couple days ago, but really, it's the same old shit I've been doing for months now, so I didn't...

Congrats again dude, looks menacing!!!!!

Thanks minerman.

Really sorry about your dad, man. Hang in there. Hoping for the best.

The "B" is a 2002 generic "1960" (not an 800/900) w/ stock G12T-75s. Stock standard B cab. 4/16 ohm mono, 8 ohm stereo.

Here's the story: Finding it was a bit of a chore. I've been looking pretty hard for about the past two or three months. You'd think in Houston, a city of 5 million people and tons of gear for sale, a B cab would pop up somewhere. Nope. A's everywhere, no B's. So I started looking in Austin and San Antonio, and found several in Austin. Meh. good pricing, but do i wanna drive out there? That would add at least 75 bucks and half a day to the whole thing. So a listing pops up on CL in my little suburb of Katy last month. Dude's selling all his shit, including his B cab, for the bargain price of $5000. He won't separate. All or nothing. Lol. Ignored. So I keep looking. I decide it's probably gotta be Austin. So a month goes by with nothing else locally and I get in touch with one of the austin listings for a B, no casters, pretty beat up, for $325. I offer him $275 since it has no casters and I'd have to make the drive. He comes back with $300, and I'm thinking about it. Lo and behold, the $5000 guy in my neighborhood re-ups his listing and decides he will part his stuff out. Cool. I hit him up for the B. He says he's thinking $500. Lol, no way. I tell him I'm not even close to that and I'm thinking $325-$400 TOPS. He says he'll do $400, so I go take a look. He's literally walking distance to my house. This morning I head over there and check his stuff. Sure enough, a proper B cab, but it's pretty beat. Tolex is thrashed. But it's sturdy, complete, grill cloth is perfect, and the speakers are correct. He fires up a Dual-Rec through it and it sounds clean and tight, no rattles, no blown speakers, sounds good, so I'm interested. But again, it's pretty thrashed. Oh well. I offer him $350. He stands firm at $400. I'm like "look man, this thing is beat, and I'll walk. You'll never get $400. This aint my first rodeo." So we drop it and just shoot the shit for a little while. So I go back and offer $350 again. He's still standing firm at $400. I tell him about the austin deal and I'm about to jump in my car and drive to austin. Then he says, "well let me sleep on it, but I really want 400". So I then offer him $375. More than I wanted to spend, but I don't feel bad about it yet. He shuffles around a bit, I say "375, I got the cash right here in my pocket" and hold out my hand for a deal shake. He shakes on it. So I got it for $375. A little too much for the condition, but all the things that actually matter are good to go, and I just wanted a B cab.

The tolex is really jacked on one side of it. Lots of small rips and tears everywhere else. Meh. No big deal. I'm excited to have it, and it's kind of cool because since I don't really need it, I'm gonna strip it down and try to restore it myself. I've been reading up on re-tolexing all day. :)

For speakers, I think I'm gonna keep two of the G12T-75s in it and X-pattern it with something else - probably the other two 65s I have laying around. That should be a really good combo in that big B cab. Or just for something really different i might make it a V30/G12H-30 cab. That would be cool too.

Oh yeah, I forgot, I'm thinking of modding my Tweaker, it's a "snubber cap" mod, clipping some of the caps on the input basically. 4 of 'em in all, & should be pretty easy to do, and reverse/repair/fix if I don't like what it does...It's supposed to "open" the amp up a little, adding high end/clarity, something I think the T15 needs to be honest...Keep your fingers crossed, I might even do it tonight, still reading up on it, but from what I can gather, it adds a little brightness & a tad of more headroom to the amp...

That's interesting.

Greg, what makes a "B" cab?

groovy, how come you are always recording on pro studios?

Do you pay for it and do it for your own pleasure,
or are you a pro, or trying to go pro?

Greg, what makes a "B" cab?

In a full stack scenario, it's the bottom cab. For one, it's a little bigger because it doesn't have the slanted top half. This leaves a bigger internal volume. Some people feel the B has better bass response. It's a little chunkier. The baffleboard leans back ever so slightly, but mostly it's a flat faced 4x12 box. Why Marshall called it a "B" I'm not sure. The top cab with the angled face is an "A" and the bottom cab with the flat face is a "B". The original Marshall stack was one gigantic 8x12 cab built for Pete Townshend. Jim Marshall told him something like "your roadies will hate you". Pete responded with "that's what they get paid for". Two weeks later Pete was asking Mr Marshall to cut it in half and the two cab setups were born. I think A cabs project and fill a room better if you're just going to use one cab, and you can hear yourself more accurately with an A, but some people just prefer B cabs. With a close mic, there's no difference in sound.
