Whatcha think? I'm thinking the second verse needs another new instrument.

Pretty much raw tracks here. Haven't started mixing it.

Stuart Keith on guitarismo solo.

Lap steel? Hmm...maybe. It would be a slow part which would balance all the busyness of the other parts. After I posted the tune here, I started working on a piano part, but it's pretty busy. I'll slow it down. Or get a lap steel part. :D Or a fiddle part. Or a flute part. Or a...

Thanks for the idea.

Just listened to both mixes.
first mix sounds very well balanced.
mix 2 - the overall sounding is more full and rich.
I would place the guit more to the centre, as you did in the first mix.
Or, bring the guit volume down a bit.

Love the part where you sing "..Oh, I know, You do it for free" :)
Guit solo is awesome. Well done!

You really do have your own sound. Each piece is quite different, but different in a way that always has your stamp on it. I know when I click on one of your tracks that I'm going to be entertained and often challenged.

The mix is tight, clean and focused. I don't think I can help you there. I guess maybe the organ, while nice, could come down a bit. I don't think it needs to be that prominent given the purpose it is serving here which is really just to add some color and variety. Try dropping it back a bit maybe?

The melody is unusual and some of the intervals against the descending chords were a bit odd to my ear, but I think it all works. Your vocal delivery here reminded me a bit of paul simon in the quicker bits.

The guitar solo is awesome So many subtle little twists thrown in. Makes me feel crappy about even bothering to play. I love the slapback echo or short room verb on there or whatever it is.

I think this is my favorite of yours so far.

This is Dobro. I was looking forward to hearing this all day. You might think that's a bit sad, but you know, I find this kind of original sound difficult to find in day to life. :D

It's well pleasing to the ears & colourful, it's really awesome. Great rhythm. I love the way you bend your voice, kind of has that twisted feel to it. I like that a lot about your vocals, they really give your music an edge. Yeh nice one man, totally inspiring. Agree with Heat, it's going up there as one of my favourites of yours.

Well, like I said, it isn't a mix, it's just raw tracks at this point. Yeah, I appreciate your comment about the panning of the guitar. There are two mics/tracks of the guitar, so in the first mp3 I just panned them left and right for a bit of space. But when I added the organ, I tried panning them both left so I could pan the organ right. It's a problem, and I don't have a clue how to solve it. The first verse has just the guitar, so when I pan it left there's nothing over on the right until the second verse when the organ comes in. But if I pan the two guitar tracks left and right, where do I put the organ? (As the actress said to the bishop.)

Nice stuff......and the organ is a good idea but I think you need a little different type of organ sound. A bit fatter. And play the organ part an octave lower. It needs to sit on the bottom of the mix and have much more tone. You can throw in a few higher octave organ runs or accents but the right organ sound could add so much soul to this :) Just my 2 cents.

Mkay, thanks.

Probably isn't the melody. It's probably my singing. :D

It's Stu. The guy's awesome. He pulls off stuff I wouldn't even *begin* to think of. Maybe that's it. Maybe he doesn't think. :D

I've got a whole album of stuff that I did all on my own which I haven't posted here, but one reason I posted this one now, aside from wanting feedback on the arrangement, is cuz collaboration is just inherently more exciting than doing everything yourself. YMMV

I think this is my favorite of yours so far.

:) Thanks.

Nah, it's more valuable than two cents. There's one chord in that organ part that I'm still not happy with, so I'm going to play with it some more, so I might as well try an octave lower to see what it sounds like. One reason I did it at that octave is so it cuts through easier. When I get the part right, I'll swap in different organ sounds too, just to see. Thanks for the ideas. Good stuff.

Thanks Paul (and others) for the nice comments. The thing is, I think of it first...then teach myself how to play it. I won't have a clue how to play it a year from now. :)

After listening, I think the new track I sent will fit better into this mix. That doubling thing doesn't sound as good as the cleaner track will. I like your new rhythm part better than what I did....and the organ too.

Yeah, everybody likes the organ. I think it's a thing about organs.

I don't know what to say about you thinking the part out before you play. That amazes me more than if you said you just picked up Elise and let 'er rip. But that might go some way to explaining why stuff you do sounds new and interesting. Just the spice and excitement the tune needed. Thanks, Stu. :)

Btw...I think you're looking for an F#min or a derivative thereof with that organ.

It's the F# that I'm having trouble with, yeah - the guitar chord isn't a minor, it's a bastard combination of F# major and some drone strings. On guitar, it's no problem, but I don't know my way around a keyboard yet.

It's cool. panning the guitars L & R would be nice.
The organ can come down somewhat & panned 1/2 way.
With the 1st mix (the download) the bass sounded a bit odd - maybe just a lack of bottom end or a variation on note choices - I don't know which - sounds more settled by the 06 mix.
VERY Pearls Before Swine vocally & with the alternat sounds etc. have you considered autoharp?

You mean hard pan the guits and pan the organs (there are two of them now, layered) 50% left and 50% right? I'll try it - thanks. Hey, I have a question. Do you overlap panned parts? For example, if there are two guitar tracks and two keyboard parts, do you pan stuff so that the two ranges overlap?

Hadn't occurred to me. Maybe I'll leave autoharp to Polly Harvey. :) I'll check out Pearls Before Swine - cheers.
