I'd take my time before buying more mics too.

yeah, besides, I only asked like 23 hours ago so it does sound a bit too rushed that I've already got my heart set on something so I'll wait and see

You got years ahead of you too. To be honest I wished I'd started my gaff when I was 16 instead of in my 40s.

well I am quite concerned about how I am going to carry it on in future years when I'm at uni and then probably living in a small apartment for quite a while :/ I guess I am going to have to build up a portable studio and then box stuff up at my parents

Staples can work quite well, but can also be pulled out fairly easily from a bump (not too big of a deal though, obviously). Auralex recommends using T-pins. T-pins are nice for your situation as they can be easily pushed in by hand instead of a hammer, which means you definitely won't be pushing through any water pipes, unless you're the hulk.
These are T-pins: http://medicalartspress.scene7.com/is/image/Quill/184173_s7?iv=CnlqG1&wid=360&hei=360
Obviously, these are quite thin and make a very small hole that can be easily covered up. Even toothpaste can block up a small nail hole fairly easily.
What some recommend is to make a "panel" out of them - maybe a few 4' x 2' blocks by gluing them onto corrugated cardboard or posterboard, and then hanging THAT with a few nails instead so you don't have 2-4 holes per tile, but instead 2-4 holes per 8 tiles.
