a simple question...maybe.

i am looking for a laptop that i can use with Sonar LE. (see my other thread).
later i might want to go bigger but for now i'm just starting out. so i've read a few articles here and now i'm thinking...
is an i3 processor with 6 GB ram more useful than an i5 with 3 GB ?
or put another way..is i3 good enough for my purpose, because before i read those articles i was thinking i5 must be better than i3 right ? but if i understand correctly perhaps more RAM is better and i3 is perfectly ok for my needs if i actually get more RAM with it.
....am i rambling ?...sounds a bit like it to me...i wish i would've paid more attention in school...mmmm milkshake !
 
More RAM is better. A faster process speed is good, but not needed with today's computers.

With the exceptions of VSTs, I would agree with this statement as a general rule. I haven't seen the performance of Intel's 3rd generation chip, but I am sure there is enough power there for 90% of us on this board.

I only caution that, more RAM will be an advantage for 64 bit computers as 32 bits has a 2 Gig limit. Just FYI, in such a case, then more horse power. Just check your DAWs specs.

I think you'll find it's 4, not 2... and it refers not exactly to your RAM but to addressable memory, and so it depends upon other memory, such as on your graphics card, that you have in your PC... I think, anyway. Not really my area of expertise...

You're right, but it what I really meant was 32 bit DAWs would not take advantage of higher RAM than the 4Gb. But, that 4Gnb will be used by the system first (vid memory for example if it is an integrated video, which most lower in laptops are)

Bottom line, if your DAW is 32bit, even on a 64bit OS, anything over (I stand corrected), 4Gb is not used.
