Greg: Full stack in the bar scene huh??? I can't say anything man, I had a Valvestate full stack in the late 90's, & in the late 80's, I had a white, 100w Jubilee head, with 2 matching 4x12's (straight & slant) that my parents bought me for a graduation present...
I'd only take both cabs if it was a "big" gig though, so usually, it was just the head & a 4x12...I had the master on about 4-5 at one gig, but other than that, it was on 1-2 nearly all the time, using stompboxes for my "sound"....Didn't have a clue about what an amp I had at the time...

Sold the Jubilee for peanuts in the early 90's to fund a Randall solid-state head & 4x12 (like George Lynch used on "Tooth & Nail...)some pa equipment & stage lights for the band I was in, which I eventually sold too...Wish I could go back in time, the white stack would still be here, along with a long list of other stuff I've sold over the years (USA Strats/Teles, Kramer Nightswan, Baretta, Pacer, 2-Jackson PS-4's, Ibanez Sabre 540 PRO (best playing guitar I've ever touched btw), Scholz Rockmodules, makes me sick when I think about all the gear I had at one time)...I've got some pics of all that stuff, only thing I don't have a scanner....

It's funny now, I chase these tones the way I do, but back in the day, I'd just plug in & play. If my sound was too bright, turn the highs down, not enough volume, turn up...In all the time I played in bands (on/off for over 15 years), I never thought about recording, the last band I was in did put out a demo (we went to a local studio & recorded about 7-8 songs, which turned out horrible), but now, I chase these tones, record, mix, wish I'd gotten into this stuff way back then...

Groovy: Thanks for the kind words about my Dad, Groovy...He got to go home this evening, he had fluid on his left lung, & they gave him 2 units of blood.....he was diagnosed with lung cancer last summer, & has been through chemo & radiation, which he's currently still doing....Really, there's nothing they can do, the treatments aren't a cure (surgery's not an option), they're just to prolong his life as long as possible...He's 76, & has lived a long, full, super life (he'll tell you the same thing, I'm quoting him actually...)...While it's just a matter of time, he's blessed with his wife (my Mom, the greatest person in the world to me, she's as close to a real life angel as I'll ever see...), 4 kids, 7 grandkids, 10 great-grandkids, & more family members one could count, that care about him more than he'll ever know, & we're all making sure he doesn't want for anything, at all, anytime....Sorry to go off topic there guys, but it's really hard for me to accept what's coming eventually, he always has been, & always will be my hero, if I could ever be half the man he is, I'd die a happy man....

Good news is hearing I don't have to work tomorrow :thumbs up:, so I might be able to post some tones a little sooner than I thought...

i just got the stereo echo rockmodule and 2 stereo chorus rockmodules are on the way

youre lucky to still have him

Lol. That's blasphemous. Jube's are worth a pretty penny now. Randalls aren't worth the gas to drive to buy one. In the late 80s and early 90s, Les Pauls and Marshalls were almost worthless. Those were good times to buy that kind of stuff.

I finally heard back from one of the cab sellers. He's out of town, but still has the cab, and we'll talk when he gets back. So, if it's in decent shape, it's mine.

Sorry about your dad man. I feel the same about mine. We get together just about every week to shoot pool or play golf or something. Now that football season is here, we'll watch many games together. My dad is fortunately still in good health, but he is getting older and I'm trying to get in as much time as I can. Good luck with yours.

I know just the place

wenceslas square on the porch of the muzeum

the national muzeum

With 7 marshall stacks on each side

3 for blasting and 4 for backups

or maybe the other way around

Still chasing the VH sound, here's a clip I did tonight with my DSL-1, of course, I know it's not perfect (both the playing & the tone...Ed's tone has way more high end, something I can't seem to get with the amps I have, I can get a little closer with an ampsim kinda, but wanted to use my amp for this...and, my playing's nowhere near his level, as you can hear in this clip...), but, IMO, it's a good tone, & very usable in a mix.....I'm playing along with some Rock Band tracks, if you listen close, you can hear the original guitar's ambience/bleed in the other tracks (especially when he does the little pick rake thing at the very beginning of the song @ 0:04...)....His tone also has a lot more saturation than mine, might be tape saturation, the echo-plex, or combination of a lot of shit....

No matter what different things made up his tone, I can honestly say, to me, it's just a timeless, classic, instantly recognized sound, that I've loved since the first time I heard it....

Another thing about his sound is the reverb, anyone got any tips other than "use a plate 'verb"???

And while it's on my ming Greg, what are you using for your bass sounds now, are you mic'ing up your Marshalls & using 'em for you bass???

Just curious, as I've tried my DSL's clean channel, but had mixed results with the outcome....99.999% of the time, it's an ampsim for my bass sounds...

Ok minerman now lose the tone control and use a bbe sonic maximizer

thats what a lot of guys use who chase that sound

that will get you an inch closer

the playing is nice and the sound is good

I just got one stupid deal of the day from the friend

im gonna try it with my rockmodules

For the past few years I've been using an Ampeg 2x10 combo and now an Orange Bass Terror into a 4x10 SWR cab. Before that I just recorded it direct. I'm strongly considering using the JVM and it's emulated output or my V30 cab at low volume.

I think your VH clip sounds pretty good. The reverb just needs to be bigger, and pan it hard right. What yours lacks in tone to my ears is the bite of crunchy power tubes. That's always what I hear in early VH sounds. It's not so much high end to me because high end is brittle and fizzy, which Eddie is not. It's the snarly crunch of power tubes. Those old Super Leads had a squeaky, kind of rubbery, gain sound when you push them hard. Eddie's sound has that in spades. It's not fizzy or harsh, but it's got that "rubbery" round kind of gain in it that's natural to Super Leads. I used to use a modded 50w JCM 800 and that thing almost couldn't help sounding exactly like early VH. I actually loved that amp, but I had to tweak it so it wouldn't sound "brown" all the time. Everything you did with it sounded like Eddie's sound. That was annoying for guy like me, but blazing powerchords sounded killer with it. The problem, as I see it, with chasing VH tone is that his whole rig is a modded clusterfuck. It's not like you can just buy the same stuff as he had and be good with it. From his guitar all the way to his speakers, he's fumble-fucked it to death. And then on top of all that, he's a habitual liar. He's so protective of his stupid sound that he lies about it constantly. So there's no telling how he actually got his early sound, but one thing for sure is that the guy can play. So there's that. But what's really funny is that Eddie himself can't even sound like his old stuff anymore. None of his sig amps sound like the old rigs, whatever they were, that he used to use. His sound was a time and place kind of thing. Like Slash. Slash's "appetite" sound was a time and place thing that he's never duplicated since.

Groovy: I had all those rack modules in you pic once upon a time, the Sutainor, EQ, Chorus & Delay...I had a BBE thing that was the same size as the Rockman modules too, but sold all of it about 12-13 years ago....

Thanks for listening to the clip, & for the compliments...

Greg: As usual, you're probably right about the power tube thing, I just always thought it was a really bright tone, combined with his style/technique, & all his crazy mods he did to his gear. You are dead on about him lying about his gear/sound though, I've read interviews asking the same questions, that he gives very different answers to....just for shits & giggles, here's the isolated track from the song (I have a bunch of these things, not only VH, but a bunch of 'em...):

While I can get closer to this tone with an ampsim, I always wanna try to get closer with my DSL, but really, don't think I can get much closer with the amps I have right now....Again, the ampsims can ger closer (somewhat), but there's just something about the sound (don't know how to describe it) of 'em that's just not "right" to my ears....

And I wasn't sure how you recorded you bass tracks nowdays, I do know you used Guitar Rig a few years ago, but had no idea you'd moved on to real amps for your bass too....cool...Low volume, cranked or what dude???

Is that the real Eddie track? To me, I wouldn't say that it's brighter than yours, but it is tighter in the low mids to me. Another problem with chasing recorded tones is you're chasing recorded tones. You're trying to copy a sound that has been EQ'd, edited, processed, mastered, and God only knows what else. I also think there's more to Eddie's amp tone than a stupid variac. I'm no Super Lead expert, but I've heard them cranked and less than cranked. Channels jumped and not jumped. His sound is much gainier and thinner than any Super Lead I've come across. I think his amps were modded or he hit the front with something. It's not just the variac in my opinion. The only way to naturally approach his kind of gain with a NMV Marshall is to crank it, and when you do that, they get fat. They don't stay all tidy and together like his sound is. They get wild. Maybe his playing is so clean that the amp stays together ?I don't know. I just think there's way more to his sound than just his playing and a cranked Super Lead.

And I wasn't sure how you recorded you bass tracks nowdays, I do know you used Guitar Rig a few years ago, but had no idea you'd moved on to real amps for your bass too....cool...Low volume, cranked or what dude???
Um, low to mid volume. I record guitars way louder than bass. I like a tight midrangey bass sound though. I don't want a bunch of thump and rumble. I usually aim for something like Lemmy's sound, but with less dirt.

I freakin' hate Van halen after reading a lot of interviews with him.
here's a synopsis of them all:
'I was fucking designing this fucking amp for Fender and I'm so fucking amazing all I had to do was fucking plug the amp in and play one fucking note and I fucking immediately fucking knew everything that anyone would ever need to know about fucking amps so I just threw the fucking guitar on the floor and my unbelievable amazingness knew from the feedback exactly what fucking design changes needed to be made because i'm fucking awesome and amazing and better than any other fucking human being on the fucking planet!'

Yup, that's about it. He is everything I hate about guitar players.

By the way minerman, you need to get a JVM. :D

My JVM will do that Eddie tone without even trying. OD1 Orange mode with the gain low to moderate....EVH brown sound city. If I could play like that I'd show you. :(
