I use Amplitube, and I usually throw a compressor in the FC chain first just to compress the signal so the DI is nice and solid. You might also wanna try putting a tube screamer on your chain in Guitar Rig so you can back off the gain of the amps. One other thing which I've heard great results with are impulses. Download Kefir or Lecab2 and find a free impulse pack (Gods Cabs and Catharsis) and toy around with those. Basically just bypass the cab in Guitar Rig (It'll make the worse guitar tone in the world) put The impulse loader after in the FX chain and play with different impulses. Hope this helps!

Impulses have to check those out...and thanks for the tip!

I had a similar issue with tracking geetars as I also live in an apartment and can't crank my tube amps to really get that "wow" factor in my distortion tones. I also am not playing a style that could be described as anything anywhere near metal; I would say it's more like indie/alternative rock. But I recently came across a piece of gear that COMPLETELY solves this problem. I was already a fan of Rivera amps (I own a 5512 combo that is just freakin' awesome) and knew that Paul Rivera is an amp wunderkind, but now I call him a genius. Check out this piece of gear; if you have $800 to spend, this thing will be your best friend in the studio forever. It's called the Rivera RockCrusher Recording Power Attenuator. There are two models; get the more expensive one with the EQ. Go to Sweetwater's site and search for it and watch the 8-minute video with Paul Rivera and make sure you're watching on something with decent speakers so you can hear what this thing does. It's sick.

PS - I tried to post the link in this message but for some reason the site is being a bitch and wouldn't let me. ;)
