Which monitors?

Hip Hop producer looking to get serious with the quality of my mixing and the sound of everything on the beat. Big and small. Trying to keep it under 400. Which ones?

Right now it is between the Alesis M1 Active MkII (which has a 6.5 inch subwoofer in each for 300). Or the KRK RP5G2 rp5 Rokit 5 Two-Way Active Powered Monitor Speaker which would cost me the same for two.

If any body thinks both of these are crap or would recommend something else let me know! Again I'm trying to spend 300 but I'm willing to go the highest of 400.
 
Find KRK G28's used for that price, or waste your money IMO. I use them almost exclusively (for now) and still have the 5" model around. The low end is hyped in the KRK 5" model, so you will be fooled by them. Again, this is my opinion, but I spent a whole year trying to mix with them, and it became simple after my upgrade to the 8" ones. You may still need a subwoofer with the 8" KRK's for your genre.

I have no experience with the Alesis monitors, but I also have not heard anything good about them either.


Keep in mind, asking about monitors is kinda like asking about underwear preferences. As long as you get used to them, you can get comfortable. The problem with small driver monitors, is that bass frequencies will not be as prominent or accurate as you need for your genre. Hip Hop demands control over the low end, as it is a huge part of the mix. If you can't hear/or monitors can't produce it accurately, then you will struggle.
 
My friend used Event TR8 and upgraded to the Event 20/20 plus a sub. He got used 20/20 pair for $350 from Guitar Center. He sold his TR8s for $100 and said that was about $30 cheep but moved them fast.

I don't know myself about this but I just talked to him last week. Just something to look into.
 
That is the point. I have a pair of Event TR8's that I don't use anymore. I can't say that I would sell them for less than $200, but that is the best way to find better gear. Used-but from respectable people. Forums like this are a great way to find deals. You just need to be careful, and test gear you find in local markets like Craigslist. Ebay gives you recourse if product is not in condition as described, but that can be a pain in the ass. I myself have had no bad experiences with fleabay, but I have heard a few stories. Mostly positive tho.

It's going to be tough, if not near impossible to get the kinda monitors you'll need for your genre without opening your budget some more.

Like jimmys69 said, you may be able to find some used gear. KRKs are really popular for hip-hop. If you can find a pair of the 8" KRK monitors and the matched sub used somewhere, that's the cheapest option I can think of that'll get you where you need if you're trying to get "serious" with the quality of mixing.
 
Actually, I use a BIC V1020 that sold for $160 new when I got it. Still that price now. There was a subwoofer comparison test at another site, that this little cheap guy performed almost as well as the KRK 10" model. I have been completely happy with it.

Have a look at the Yamaha HS series. They look really good for budget speakers. May be coincidence but I haven't heard many flattering things about Event or KRK for the most part.
 
well personally i have the krk 5's and they do me well. Of course if its in your budget and you have the room then you can go bigger. Whatever you do though compare prices before making a buy. I personally got mine off craigslist for about $150(pair!). Check craigslist,amazon, etc.

Bah just hearsay. Just because a few folks don't like them, there are sure to be 3 times as many swearing by them. The word on the streets (on this end) is still unfavorable.

Same story with the KRK's. Some folks label them inaccurate and too bass heavy; other's say they are fine. I guess it can depend on the genre as was mentioned earlier.

That's the problem with recommending monitors, it's like trying to recommend microphones, evey one has different tastes, which is why there are many brands and not just one brand.

When the 20/20 monitors were first released they were highly recommended, they were one of the first monitors with built in amps, there has since been many versions released, to say they don't get a good rap is nonsense, just like every other bad rap. have the people saying that brands are no good on misguided hear say. Review of the first model newer ones here.
