File Format Submission

This one goes out to any moderator or administrator related to the comp!

So i'm planning to upload a 24 bit wav for my submission as to start off with soundcloud's compression ruins the mix for streaming purposes, but seeing how many submissions there are the judging team might not enjoy donwloading thousands of files 60mb in size.

Any thoughts or an official preference of file quality? Hoping the answer is to hell with the bandwidth if all tracks will be downloaded off soundcloud haha

-Remember to apply dither when decreasing bit depth!

How to make a good mix and also simultaneously improve the fidelity and quality

I don't have a console so I used FL Studio for joining and enchaning this Liza Colby Track. Then I used Virtual DJ Home to add some special effects and enchanements to the track.Hope the listeners like this clarity of the song and my way of the track.
Plugins used are Reverb and Filter and Fruity Flanger with Fruit Kick and Electronic Drum Synth. Some parts of the track have been rendered using Audacity.

Hardware includes a Core i3 PC with Windows XP Pro,Frontech JIL-3442 0.5Mw Headphone and a Zebronics SC 4-Channel PCI Sound Card.

The overall budget is very low. This means that good productions need time and talent and not good hardware and budget in most cases.

My track link for Gearfest is soundcloud.com/tu-he/gearfestpuremixcontest

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I imagine that they have been listening to them as they come in like you do when someone gives you a resume, a quick glance and decide which pile it goes into.

I'm thinking next time they won't make this open to everyone on the internet and may not have been expecting such a large number of entrees. I definately wouldn't want to have to listen to that many renditions of the same track. Just imagine how many e-mails they must get asking for feedback.

So many mixes to listen to. The judges have a tough time. There's no way they can listen to all the mixes all the way through in the time allotted to judge. The marking matrix would be interesting to understand.

It would also be interesting to get an analysis of different DAW systems used, popular effects (plugins and outboard) etc from the mix comments for all the contest entries.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. I just want to share my experience mixing this song, particularly with the mix buss compression technique. Have you tried applying the compressor just at the end of the mix and not at the beginning? For me was a great result, not only for this particular song.

I hope you share you experience.

Cheers from Colombia,

Jesús

What's everyone uploading to Soundcloud? MP3 or Wave?
I've used both in the past.. I already posted mine but it was MP3.
I hate the sound of soundcloud and never use it with clients..
Just wondering..what would have been better. And if I've already posted my version am I able to repost a Wave version or a touch up. I posted it as a mix..so of course it's low in volume. But I did it quickly and of course after the fact I hear things I want to touch up in the bottom. But I thought once you share/submit that's it.

and now after uploading a clients mix as Wave sounds much better.
So can I go back and repost a wave version of the gearfest mix? I don't have a soundcloud accountant that allows to make changes.. So if I delete then repost is it to late?
Thanks..

I think most are posting wav. files.

You can repost as long as there is only one mix posted on June 1st, which is the deadline...

To Sychronia:
Kick gets a little overwhelmed, but I like your base mix. Also, a little top end eq would go a long way to make the whole thing come together. Vocals have it, but the rest is made dark by the lack of. Good work@!

I have to disagree with you, its difficult, but not impossible. I've mixed 20 band shows live, and that is far harder to make each band sound different than to check email. Most contestants don't care that it's inconvenient, so nor do I. They get what they ask for, at the very least a properly mixed song. I am enjoying the resubmission game that pops old mixes to the top of the "honor" roll. Make sure you folks are resubmitting your mixes to the group.
