When I use to just play Death Metal I was just good without really thinking about it. Now I'm doing some stuff outside my comfort zone and it's a mother funking biotch

That's why it's called a "comfort zone". Stay comfortable and you're good to go.

Yeah, but the thing is I like to do something different from time to time. I can't seem to get stuck or just stay in my comfort zone. I like to bounce around and do a bunch of different stuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't

Understandable, but the problem with that the way I see it is you never actually get good at anything.

yeah, but mostly I just like playing guitar so being versatile is only a bonus. It makes all your music better when you're well rounded

any additional skills can translate to other uses if your goal is to be the best player you can be.
If instead you decide that you only want to play one style then clearly some skills have no use but if you want to be an all around player then all technique and/or skills help somewhere along the line.

Sure, I don't disagree if you're/we're talking about playing ability. I thought we were talking about writing. My point is something like...if I start to dabble in latino rap music, there's no way it's gonna make my rock and roll any better.

Lol. No. Rap has never entered my mind, not even as a piss-take. There's no lower form of life in music than rap. I won't stoop to that level even as a joke. I have absolutely no respect for rap or rappers.

Well first let's take into consideration that if you don't experiment and try new things you run the risk of getting a little stale. I mean how many times can you re-write the same song? The acoustic folkie americana hippie ditties really help with perfecting your guitar playing, especially if you're paying attention to how your playing sounds. I still do my metal / shred warm ups and finger exercises on my acoustic which is very challenging. You also learn to translate songs into different genres easily. I can take something like The Misfits "astro zombies" and turn it into a pretty folk style camp fire strumming chords type song. I can take something like Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky" and turn it into a full blown Death Metal tune.
Most of my guitar friends are ok at playing cover songs on their electric guitars, but aren't quite as good on acoustic. Most of my songs, especially my new ones which will probably be purely acoustic guitar and vocals are a mix of a ton of types of music. Some how music blends oh so nicely. Country, blues, classic rock, folk, and even melodic metal style leads come out sounding absolutely beautiful on an nice acoustic, even punk rock if you approach it properly. Getting stuck in your comfort zone can get stale real fast.
Then my final point to why it's good to experiment. Is while I'm working on my folk project and take a break from my fart metal. This way when I come back to it I'll perceive it from a fresh perspective and maybe even have enhanced my recording skills at the same time. I'm still going to finish my punk rock album too within the next few years. And I might even eventually work out a strictly blues album. You end up learning so many styles and so many ways to get different sounds and techniques along the way. In my opinion it's absolutely crucial to learn as much as you can about your instrument and be the best player you can be.
If any of it ever comes out being any good is strictly a matter of opinion. I have people who love and people who hate all the music I do. It might never sound as good as the stuff coming out on the radio or even some of the guys from these forums, but it'll be mine and make me happy. So, that's all that matters really

I disagree. Maybe you'll get stale, and that's fair enough, but it's not that way for everyone. I do better when I'm locked in and focused. Exploring other styles and genres is counterproductive for me. That's just for writing though. I agree that trying different shit is good for playing - even for me - and I don't even really care about playing good.

This I agree with. Make yourself happy and everyone else can go to hell.but it'll be mine and make me happy. So, that's all that matters really

I only know enough spanish to get myself in trouble with my lawn guy. You'd think after all this time living in Texas I'd know some legit spanish, but like most people I only know the bad words.

Oh well, I only know what I've learned from Cypress Hill. We don't have a very large latino presence here in Maine.
