Hey everyone please join in and name any kind of equipment you use that is not very well known. Unknown audio manufactures that make really amazing gear that is not marketed on a large scale to the masses. It can be anything
 
Not sure if this fits but I've been using Ward Beck preamps almost exclusively for a while.

True! You can find raw channel strips (4 at a time) any where from $45 to $100. on the bay.

True that! Be careful though.
There are line modules with transformers that just need a few tweaks to become lovely mic pres, then there are line modules without the transformers that I guess aren't as easy to adapt.
I think I picked up my 8 (with x-formers) for about $45 each IIRC.
