Hi,

All was going well until recently. Suddenly, I cannot save a file as an mp3, only WAV. I keep getting an error saying it is an unrecognised format. Currently using Cool Edit Pro 2.0.

Any advise or guidance appreciated!

Thanks

MP3 is of the Devil - never never use it!

Always record and edit as WAV and *only* convert to MP3 at the very very end if you need a low quality compressed version for an iPod.

Once you have finished editing your high quality WAV file - then you need to do a conversion to MP3 and save it as a different file. You can't "save as", you need to do a conversion.

Thanks John,

All audio work is certainly saved as WAV files. You hit the nail on the head as I need mp3 files for the iPod which I listen to when running.

I was once able to save my WAV file as an mp3 file using the "save selection" function but that seems to have been lost. I have used converteres before and prefer not to.

Do you think reinstaling will help? Also, I have around 80 gigs stored in Cool Edit. Will that all be lost if I uninstall then reinstall?

Many Thanks

Some DAW software only gives you a limited number of MP3 conversions, after that you have to buy a license (about 20quid I think) .

There are many free MP3 encoder apps' but can I suggest Magix Sampltude Silver Cloud? The converter is very comprehensive giving you all sorts of options on bit rates etc. The "cloud" system seems pretty straightforward too but I have not used it as yet.

The old Msoft Media Centre Edition also had a handy converter built in ('bout all that WAS good about it!). If you download Win Live for Win 7 I bet that does MP3?
Dave.

I spent hours yesterday downloading a converter from db-something Freeware that loaded me up with a bunch of crap and games and rearranged my pc internet settings, probably virus too.... all while I was trying to convert some "unknown file types" from cd's I burnt years ago at 192khz but had some oddball extension-name none of the standard converters seem to recognize...

beat_boy.... 80gigs.... I hear ya... anyway, just posting to beware of some of the free converters out there.

Much easier & often better to use a sep converter. Thta way you have choices about the type etc. Not all MP3 compression is the same - look it up.
I render to wav & then drag that into an old LAME converter that I quite like that does the job quickly and well. I also drag the wav into foobar etc etc to convert to FLAC etc easily.

I fully agree with all the comments about MP3 being the work of the devil. However, that said, CEP2 should be able to save in that format and do a decent job of it with lots of user options to get the best out of it.

One possibility I recall from the deep and dark past was that you could fool the system by manually typing .mp3 as part of a file name when saving to .wav or some such other format. This would lead to CEP trying to save with a double file extension (.mp3.wav) and confusing itself.

Try a Save as command and check the extension on offer, correcting it if it's doubled up.

Failing that, I'd try to reinstall.

This may be too basic but why don't you try exporting as a WAV file, then go into iTunes settings and set the MP3 conversion to either 320kbs or VBR. Assuming this is just for casual stuff, it should work just fine without any third-party converter nonsense.

Forgive my ignorance for I do not use iTunes (and generally keep Applecrap well away from my PCs!) but surely that is still just a converting process?

Even on this P4 3G clunker it takes but a few seconds to process a 3 minute .wav using Sam Silver.

Dave. "If you can keep your head when all about you are loosing their's, you probably do not understand the situation" (with apologies to Rudy)

Rather than all the awkward work rounds, I repeat: CEP2 should have an MP3 codec and do a good job. Just go rumaging around in that dusty desk drawer until you find your installation disk and re-install it.

I use Audacity to generate an .mp3. You need the mp3 plugin as it doesn't come standard with the mp3 functionallity. Works a treat and allows you to Label mp3 with name and Genre etc etc. Also does Low quality to High.
cheers
