First M-Audio DAW

So a while ago I bought a yamaha daw, pretty bad stuff, I just bought a copy of pro tools 10. So I'm looking for a daw to go with it. Im looking to spend around $500au. I've looked at the m-audio fast track ultra 8r and the m-audio pro fire 2626 FireWire. I'm wondering which is better any for around the same price. And the amount of channels avaiable etc.

You mean you r looking for an audio interface , it is different from daw , and what do you mean by yamaha daw ? is it a mixer or a mixer/controller ? not everything named DAW , DAW refers to Digital Audio Workstation , and only your protools is your DAW not your mixer or interface , . and if your yamaha is a digital mixer you don need an interface

The yamaha was a little 4 input mixer with a USB 2.0 port on the back that hooked into cubase. I've got rid of it now for various reasons including I couldn't get it to be recognized as having 4 sperate channels :/ so when I found a copy of pro tools 10 cheapish I grabbed it. Now I need an audio interface for it. I'm looking for something with 8 inputs + (xlr or ts I don't mind) for around $500au I've found the two I mentioned above (FireWire 2626 and the ultra 8r) I'm just looking for any better audio interfaces for the same price...basically and what how many separate channels I can record into pro tools at one time, looking at recording a band 2 vocals, 2 guitars, bass and as many drum inputs as I can get (hoping for bass, snare and one overhead at least).

Also I don't mind buying second hand if that can get me a better audio interface for the same price.

It recognize only 2 channels because it was an analog mixer and it send only 2 master fader to the daw , if you want a mixer with separate channels , you need a digital mixer , but I think an interface would be a better choice since digital mixers are much more expensive ,
I didn't have any experience with those two models u mentioned , but personally if I want a new interface i wouldn't go for m-audio , but that s just me , Focusrite has good reputation , before you buy anything search for any review , sos has good reviews on equipment ;) Choosing A PC Audio Interface: The SOS Guide
 
So after a quick look around, the 2626 and the pro40 are the two main contenders here. A few things I like about the 2626 is that you don't need to use the in built pre amps, is this also true on the pro 40? I have a bunch of tube pre amps at home that will sound much better than what's being used in either of these :P also I don't think the pro 40 works with pro tools, do you know, if not then it's a no go for me as I've already started using protools (a friends home studio) so all my stuff to date is there, plus I've already got a full copy of pro tools haha. More info on either of these???

any audio interface will work with any daws , as long as they recognize by ASIO (that almost all of them will), any kinda dac that is AISO compatible will work with any daw ,
 
Awesome :) I checked on the avid website for a pt 10 comparability list and it didnt include any products apart from m-audio/digi design ones...weird :S last question just to confirm the 2626 has the ability to record 26 sperate input channels at the one time (if you use an expansion) whereas the pro 40 can only do 20 (with expansion)?

8x analog in
16x adat in (2 adat inputs)
2x spdif (two channels)
=26 channels

pro40:
8x analog in
8x adat (1 input)
2x spdif (two channels)
=18 channels

Only advantage is the 2 adat inputs on 2626 vs 1 input on pro40. In both case you have to buy external pre to get these extra channels.
I was going thru the same thing you are going now and I looked both: 2626, pro 40 and others... and decided to get Saffire 56 (I liked the RME Fireface 800 too, but it is twice as expensive as 56 and as turns out it has awful control interface imo) :D I bet you can get used 56 for good price.
 
I don't believe either of these interfaces will record more than 18 channels simultaneously. And that's only if you add other SPIDF & ADAT equipped hardware. You're confusing these interfaces with a mixer. They are not the same thing.
