TASCAM Wallpaper

Jeff, just a quick note...the 388 Studio 16 looks interesting. I'm amazed that you were able to get something together so quick...looks great. But, and maybe its just because i'm used to the look of the 388, it just looks...wrong...you know? Like the transport section gets dwarfed maybe. I recall after I got my 388 that, compared to the Ampex stuff I had been working on the 388 actually seemed small and "cute"...compact...just right. Something about that gets lost when the mixing section doubles in size. Don't know if you see that at all or what anybody else thinks but that's how I am struck.

Jeff, that 4-channel noise gate unit...wow...i have NEVER seen one before, and I can't believe what you had to do in order to craft that image. Wow!

And thanks for the redux on that shot of my 388. Verrrrry nice!

Yeah, I agree. the 388 is best left as it was originally designed. But you asked, so I obliged! And also why I did a couple more of the 388 in a more natural state to redeem its memory :D

Thanks for the feedback on the GA-40! It was a very involved project but I was pleased with it and with discovering a rare piece from TASCAM's history.

Anyway, I expect many of you will disappear from the board for a few days over the Christmas holidays so I will wish you all a Merry Christmas and thank everyone who has contributed images for me to work on and everyone else who has checked out my handywork and was kind enough to toss me some kudos for it.

Been hunting around for decent images of the TASCAM 44 for years now and with very little luck, was only able to find some tiny images that were pretty much all pretty cheesy, picture quality-wise. Then last night I was doing another search and found some really decent shots which were not huge but big enough to turn into a couple of wallpaper shots for the gang here!

Anyway here's the first two I've worked on and might have one or two more later on.

Worked on another Frankenstein project today and decided to put together a 58 out of several different images from several different sources. The meters came from my MS-16, the splicing block from Sweetbeats 48, a few different pictures of different parts of the buttons and reel table from various image searches and the rest hand drawn in to fill in the many missing gaps!

Anyway, here's the 58 in the classic catalog shot...

Just looked through for that. I do have about 10 images of it but none of them are suited for a wallpaper format, which is what I do here. So...sorry.

But! If you have this mixer and a camera, take some good shots of it and then I can hopefully work on that for you.

Thanks once again to Sweetbeats for providing me with some higher resolution images of his 48 which allowed me to put together a smoother rendition for the wide screen wallpaper format that I've been doing now.

Anyway, this image is a composite of three different images. One taken of the 48 with reels and one without and the last one for use as part of the background. Each chosen separately for its own merits of color, detail and so on.

Thanks and glad you liked them! :)

The larger files you provided me with with were so much more of a pleasure to work on as I was finally able to get a decent cut out of the reels against the "sawtooth" window background. Also easier to deal with reducing the ISO noise and still retaining some detail! :)

One question though! What are the real world colors on a 48? I have seen some pictures where the middle transport button section looks like battleship gray, to gold, to brown, depending on the lighting and exposure? I'm assuming its a light brown color. Is that right? I also have a better understanding of why those decks were predominantly shot in black and white, as the film photographers of the day must have pulled their hair out trying to get accurate color for their print media with all those differing beige and brown tones.

same color scheme as the 58, MS-16 and ATR60 series...tan dress panel with light brown plastic trim. Somewhere I've got a shot of my 48 and 58 side-by-side and that shot reveals their identical color scheme.

^ thanks for that! I figured it was a tan/light brown color but just wanted to be sure before I do any further images of those. One thing I now know for sure, that flash photography will turn that color gray. :(

File this next one under O for Obscure!

I remember seeing some pictures of some TEAC data recorders in an old 40 series brochure and never really thought much about them as I didn't then understand what they were for and to this day still don't know! :D

But, I was hunting around for interesting pictures of TEAC and TASCAM stuff and discovered this odd beast on ebay and decided to take a stab at stitching together a couple of shots of it which contained the upper and lower sections of it on separate pictures. And of course had to do a mile of corrections to both images to straighten them out and clean them up enough to look presentable. I doubt if anyone will want this as a wallpaper image for their desktop so I didn't do the usual wide screen formatting on this one and just left it in the original full resolution size for those who want to take a closer detailed look at it. I'm guessing it was made somewhere around the mid to late 70's based on the knobs they used on it which were similar to ones found on the M1 and M2A mixers of that era.

Anyway, here she is, the TEAC SR-50 "Portable" (doubtful), Data Recorder! :)
