Singing with technique or just "freely" without thinking about anything like that?

Hey guys!
I always sung alot in different bands and projects and I was always happy with my vocals in general.
The problem is that I really strongly am dependended on my "mood", so there are days when my voice feels really "smooth" and I have no problems at all and then there those days when I just have a smaller range and my voice feels sore without an obvious reason.
Some guy told me a few days ago that I should consider taking a few lessons to really build up a technique (I never really did so) but I'm not so sure... I always liked the concept of just singing "freely" from the heart without thinking about special techniques or stuff like that and so I built my own style and can add my true emotions.
And I'm not sure if taking lessons and learning technical stuff could make my singing-style too "normal", take away my emotional "involvement" in the singing or if it actually helps with my problem at all!
Any advices or stuff like that? :)

Well...once you learn a technique and use it enough....it's not something you have to think about while singing, it just comes naturally and you can then still focus on your emotional involvement...just better, 'cuz you have better technique.

Some singers can work out and improve their technique on their own...but if you are hitting a wall, then take a few lessons and see how it goes.

Yeah, I think I'll actually do so...
It's just that singing with technique changes the way your voice sounds while singing doesn't it?
And I'm not sure, I want this actually^^

Mmmm...not sure what you mean by "changes your voice"?
I think only puberty can do that. :)

Improving your technique will moslty help you find your singing strengths and give you more control over the voice you have.
IOW, if you don't know how to sing from the chest/gut and you mostly sing with your head voice....learning chest/gut technique won't take away you ability to still sing with your head voice...it will just give you more options and better control.

Okay, I guess this convinced me now :D
I'm sure now that I'll take a few lessons :)

What Miro said earlier. A good contemporary vocal teacher will not make you change your voice. He or she will work with what you've got and give you techniques that will allow you more control over your voice.

Think of it like driving a car. You can learn how to drive all by yourself. Or you can get lessons. And then later on you can go on advanced driving courses that develop your skills in car control, how to react in various situations and so on.

It's impossible to sing without feeling, IMPOSSIBLE I TELL YOU!

I keyed up on something else that you said; about your singing ability based on your mood. Although you sing with emotion, you should strive to separate your mood from your performance. Huh?? What I mean is, your performance should be based on the feel of the song, not how you feel. When you step up to the mic, it should just be you, the song and the performance. Leave everything else at teh door. This means controlling your attitude, which ain't easy and is kind of like something from Mr. Spock on Star Trek or something. :p (showing my age, I know...)

But if you can do this, then your performances will be much more consistent, spot-on for the song, and you'll get better takes quicker.
