Most of the albums were recorded live off the floor to 8 track, with vocals added later. (either Tascam 388 or Fostex M80)

First listen, but I like what I heard. Which songs did you sing on yourself, out of interest?

And do you have any future plans after the split?

hey thanks for all the support you've given us over the years ...

i sang all except 'flower for your crown' and 'black butterfly'.

yeh, we're spread across 3 states right now, but we will likely continue on in some form. it's the last album of the previous incarnation of Austin, TX. There will likely be another Magic Hero album, but it may be awhile.

I've been listening to some of the recordings posted here for a couple of days.

Kudos to everyone!

Here is one I did on my 388

You Are Beautiful by Christopher Kevin on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

Tape: RMG 900
Drums are a loop I duplicated in Pro Tools and recorded into the 388.
Guitars and Bass are live and amps are mic'ed with vintage AKG mics
Piano is played through Pro Tools into the 388
Vocals were recorded though a MXL Ribbon mic. I ran the signal though Pro Tools as the front end so I could compress/EQ prior to hitting tape.
Spring reverb on the FX send on the 388

I mixed the song live while recording back into pro tools and added Waves Fairchild compressor, Kramer MPX and some limiting to the master buss.

I hope you enjoy!

Another one of my weird fantasy-oriented songs, this time a bit more akin to a conventional fairy-story.

Tracking was done to an MSR-24. Vocals were tracked to a TSR-8 and then copied across.
I used my Revox B77 to do the delay on the vocals, 7.5 ips for most of it and 15ips for that 1969 sound in the middle section. Mixing was done to an A807.

The finale could do with a little tweaking, but I think it works reasonably well.

Wow JP
It reminds me of dropping acid.
Seriously though good choice of instrumentation its spot on for the genre. Good work.
I absolutely love the synth solo about 1/4 of the way in.
Was it a real synth or a midi sim?
It's got that "Genesis" sound.
the whole thing works a treat. So glad i listened now
Tape is the new Dope.
Thats some nice decks you have there too. Well done mate thanks for sharing.
If i had to say anything the drums were a little buried but that just may be my monitoring system.

Thanks. The organ intro was inspired by the particularly other-worldly 'Only a Northern Song' by The Beatles. Originally it just cut into the verse.

I used one of these for the lead: Creamware Minimax ASB

...so it's... well, it's standalone hardware, but at the end of the day it's running software on a DSP array. The bass synthesizer and the second voice in the solo were done on a Waldorf Pulse, which is a digitally-controlled analogue synth and did basically all the synth leads until 'Baklawa Doom' when I got the minimax.

Both were controlled by MIDI, though.

It's got that "Genesis" sound.

Thanks, I am very partial to Genesis, but I've never quite been able to get there.

Yeah, I had a problem trying to keep the drums from being buried, I'll try to correct that when I do the full mix for the album.

On the subject of Genesis, I was going to refer back to one of my slightly earlier recordings, but it looks like I forgot to post it here, so I may as well do that now.

I will probably rerecord a lot of the vocals, they're kind of off. Again, MSR-24, TSR-8 and A807 for mixing. The echo was mostly done on a copicat, but I also used a digital delay in places.

The reason I mention it is that the section from about 6:36 up until just after 'Who cares?' came from a bizarre dream where someone was playing a Genesis album downstairs that I had never heard before. I woke up very soon after and was able to put what I could remember into the song as it fit well. I think it sounds closest to 'Firth of Fifth'. I was never able to get the echo quite like it was in the dream, though it would probably require some very strange multitap delay or a DAW.

Hey lonewhitefly, I really dig that Jeff Moss tune! It's got a really cool Van Dyke Parks-y thing going on--very interesting place to take that song.

This is our most recent thing:
yvynyl
(sorry I can't find the original soundcloud link for some reason)
It has some not-so-subtle tape flanging.

Here's some new songs, both with all tracking done analog and nothing but hardware effects. The first one ("Repetition") is recorded at our small studio on my Fostex Model 80. It was mixed down to the laptop at 96 KHZ/32 bit float as we only got one reliable 8-track, then transferred back to the Fostex for additional dubbing. 14 tracks was used in all. There's a reverse reverb on the vocals and some double tracking of guitars, bass and guitar going on to create a massive sound.
It's like the crossover between My Bloody Valentine, Happy Mondays and Spacemen 3.

The second one is a live improvisation recorded from the desk. Thinking back we should have used a third track for a room mic as the sound engineer of course made the levels relative to the four loud guitar amps on stage. But nevermind, the guest vocal by Jens is great.

Download the FLAC-version to get the sonics right.

Here's my band's new e.p.:
Freelove Fenner // Pineapple Hair e.p.
We recorded to 1" 8-track (Otari MX-70; Quantegy 456 stock) and mixed to 1/4" 2-track (Studer B67-mkII; 3m 996 stock).
No digital effects were used.
Our friend mastered it using the Thermionic Culture Phoenix as the primary bus limiter (really cool unit) and the Retro A23 (Pultec-style) as the stereo EQ. He also made use of an older SPL stereo de-esser on a couple tracks with harsh hi-hats (hi-hats--the bane of my existence).
The well-treated listening environment for the afterhours mastering session was a great learning experience: Next time around I'll be more careful about hitting the tape hard enough when appropriate (tape hiss was quite evident on the bigs at times); and I now know I can basically trust my monitors (I was always a bit sheepish about aggressively EQing, I always heard a buildup around 400hz--it was really there).

I enjoyed that, and preordered a copy. It sounds like some weird hybrid of The Police and The Breeders.
Did you play on it yourself, or did you just do the engineering?

Yes, I can hear a slight hiss problem there - kind of like mine before I started using SM900 at 355nWb. Recapping it may have helped mine too. Hiss or no, I like what you've done there.

Hey thanks JP, really appreciate that. And yeah, it's my band (along with my girlfriend and another friend on drums).
I've always enjoyed the songs you've posted here. Sometimes it reminds of a fusion of couple of my favs: Todd Rundgren (good era) and The Cleaners From Venus (but better fidelity).
Mentioning re-capping reminded me that not all the hiss is tape. I made a homebrew LA2A and I didn't have a trimmer capacitor for the section that control frequency response, so I'd temporarily left a fixed cap in that gave a hi-shelf boost (with tube hiss). I have the day off today so I'm going to fix that!

Thanks. I'm hoping to have a demo for the new song laid down this weekend, but it's still a bit up in the air. I finally decided it was time to learn bass and I'm not yet at the point where I can play the entire 9 minute song with no mistakes, though I'm getting pretty close.

outstanding work. classic and original -- a rare and essential combination. (no sonic or technical issues worth mentioning are audible to me).

Hi,

These 3 tunes are from my lastest little EP called First Persons, recorded using a Tascam 388. I'll be super pumped for some feedback!
