Can two DP-008 recorders, or a DP-008 and DP-03, be synchronized in order to record more than two tracks at simultaneously and to provide up to 16 "real" tracks? Before I bought the DP-008, I think I read a review of the DP-008 that said it was possible to synch two DP-008's, but I have been unable to find any information on this subject since then. Thanks in advance for any advice!

You have to use MIDI. I came up with a lot of results when I googled "Synch Tascam" but didn't notice any with your two machines specifically. But I believe both of those are MIDI capable so you should be able to get them to work together. Unfortunately, I'm not the one to ask for specific MIDI advice. Find someone knowledgable about MIDI after you make the hookup if you have problems.

Now you've got me wanting to synch my 2488neo and DP-01.

Thanks david42. I will check out the potential for using a MIDI synch.

im no midi expert but theres no midi in or out on my dp-008, man

I don't see any Midi connection either. Both machines are limited to recording two tracks at one time. I had hoped to be able to increase that to four. Still, the machines are both impressive for their size, cost and intended use.

oh yeah, i agree about the price and quality of the machine. i dont know, maybe you can send 2 signals to a connector and put that on 1 input and take another 2 signals and put it in the other input? just a suggestion :=)

Sorry for the bad tip. All the digital Tascams I've used had MIDI.

I have other solutions for you. Go ahead and record on both machines using four inputs. Since you have to start recording manually, they won't be synched. Export the tracks from both machines onto a computer, and use editing software to match them up. Don't move one of the machine's tracks and make the other one's match up. Then import them onto the machine you didn't move the tracks from and they will match. (By "move" I mean editing, moving the track in time, not exporting the track, which is "moving" it from one machine to the other.

This can be made really easy by having some kind of count before the song starts, such as four stick hits.

I use Audacity, which is free, to edit tracks like that.

An update on synching my DP-01 and 2488neo--it didn't work. I'm really sure I had all the settings correct, and Tascam support told me that I could indeed get the transport of one machine to control the other, but no luck at all. It would've been neat to do. perhaps the MIDI doesn't work on my DP-01; it's older and I bought it used and I've never used MIDI before on it.

I'll let everyone know if I ever get it to work.

Ok I did get it to work.

I should have pressed play or play/record on the slave machine before pressing play on the master machine. I assumed that presszing play on the master would be equivalent to pushing play on both, but it's not. Like I said, I know jack about MIDI. Well, I know a little bit now.

So, what can I do with 2 machines synched together, other than having 2 extra inputs? The machines do not send music back and forth, so I won't hear one through the other without two sets of monitors. Even if I record fewer than 8 tracks, I have an advantage. I can now record 2 DI guitars whereas before I could only do 1. That's about it. But that causes new difficulties. There's no way to hear both of those guitars through the same headphones unless I send both headphone outputs to a mixer and then send the mixer to the headphone amp. It's nice to know I can do that if I need to.

One other thing--I can have quadraphonic music if I hook up two sets of monitors. I am already imagining the mind blowing potential here. I've been wanting to hook up four amps through three stereo delays--Delay 1 left into delay 2 and delay 1 right into delay 3. Delay 2 and 3 then each feed two amps. Gonna do some ping-ponging heaven soon I think--and record it. But who to share that with? I can't master anything that way and send it to anyone! stereo only.

Sorry for my wandering mind here.
