No effects no mastering just raw.
Let me know what you think pls
btw the mic can be seen in my thread entitled old microphone in the mic threads

Now that's a nice sound! 50+- year old microphone huh. They don't make them like that any more. ;)

Hey man, I listened to your I'm only sleeping cover, loved it! Could you go into a little more detail on how you recorded it? what equipment you used yada yada. Thanks!

Magic Hero free download

Recorded on Scully 280 4-track (on Scotch 206), mixed to Ampex 440 mono (on Scotch 202) ... what you hear is the direct transfer from the Ampex (fades and all ... 3 edits):

Magic Hero vs. Rock People

Nice. I'm not really familiar with the song (didn't watch Sesame Street much as a kid!) but it definitely works well in your style. What instruments were used?

thanks, it was a '65 Fender Electric XII, Alvarez acoustic 12 string, Danelectro bass, RMI Rock-si-chord, Maestro Rhythm King, Ludwig Acrolite, glockenspiel, melodica.

Aha. I wasn't sure whether the glockenspiel was real or something else, and I was wondering what the melodica was. What really intrigues me is the drum machine - I'm curious how you'd easily make preset rhythms with 1968 technology.

In this case, it was used on the 'shuffle' (or 'swing'?) rhythm, then the live drums were played over it (essentially a snare w/ brushes, floor tom & cymbal -- the 'bass drum' comes from the Rhythm King). You can't actually program it, but it does have buttons you can play live, which I have done in the past. I generally use it as a metronome if one is required, then take it out of the final, or leave it in at a lower volume if it fits well.

what would it be like to have to run and hide for your whole life to avoid summary execution just because you happened to be born with wings? This song attempts to tackle that question.

The song gradually built up during the week, and was basically finalised last night, after I had this little melody come into my head when I was lying in bed at 3am last night.
Today has been spent polishing it up, recording it, performing the vocals, and finally mixing it. I think it turned out rather well, but there are some things which could be improved. I am rather pleased with the lyrics, this time... usually they're almost an afterthought :-/

Tracking was done to a TASCAM MSR-24 and a TSR-8 for the vocals, which were then bounced to the 1" machine. Mixing was done on a Soundcraft MFX20 to a Studer A807.

The string synth was a Cheetah MS6 fed through an Electroharmonix Small Clone chorus pedal. The piano was a Triton Extreme, other instruments included Roland MVS-1, JV1010, Hammond XM-1, Creamware Minimax ASB, and my fake mellotron thing.

Things which I'm not sure about:
The piano intro. I was trying hard to make it sound less mechanical... now I'm concerned it sounds too amateur.
I thought the metronome sounded good alongside the other drums, other people might not.
It needs more variations and overdubs on the outtro

"Don't get me wrong. I have no love for the lil' shifterthings. But this guy was harmless. Had a wife, two kids, no crime record."

Stormy Monday Blues - cover

Hi guys,

We had a recording session yesterday and at the very end we recorded this blues as an improvisation. Could You please give me some opinions on sound? We also had 2 problems - during sax solo player accidently kikced mic stand a few times (too much beer) and during tracking main vocal was recorded to hoot couple of times (also beer problem) :) Since it was for joke, that doesn't matter.

Everything was recorded and mixed live, Studer 169 mixing desk, roland re201 space echo to Studer C37. One mic on each instrument and one on main vocal...

The performance here is outstanding, and I like the tone of everything but the cymbals. What's up with those? It kind of sounds like someone was dragging a wire mesh blanket over them!

Awesome job on the vocals! :)

Yeah for starters all of the cymbals were terrible because my roommate (the drummer) got his cymbal bag stolen at a show a few weeks earlier, and also the drummer is singing the 2nd part so the cymbals are bleeding really badly into his mic. It was just something we did for fun, no real attempt at sonic perfection.

Thanks for listening dude

Ooh, I hadn't noticed it was possible to download these. I rather like it.

Who spoke the intro? And what actually is that piece you're using in the second half? I've heard it often enough, but I have no idea what it's called.

It's my dad who did the intro. I'm not sure either, I seem to remember it being called the snake dance but I'm not sure of its real origins.
