The New Tone Thread

My name isn't Bob, for instance ........

Whereas mine is! Lol. But I get called Bubba or Bubs by quite a few people in the meat world. Some others off of the interwebz call me Geoff or Geoof for some reason I've never been able to fathom. :laughings:

I hope this isn't off base but you guys are talking about Greenbacks and I have several including some Scumbacks (h75,m75,bm75).

Here's my PRS 305 into a Grease Monkey and driving a fairly new pair of Scumback BM75s. The tone is just on the verge of breakup and I really love the percussive feel of this.

PRS 305 -> Grease Monkey -> BM75 -> r121

Oh wow.

Excellent playing, you were able to get some of that whistly dynamic stuff on the high notes there,
about 1 minute in.

That amp is incredible!

Hey minerman, listened to the clip you posted yesterday. I really like the tone you got going there. It's close to what I would like to have...a little creamier (?) is what I would prefer, but I'm not getting that either with my rig. I know some don't like that much distortion, but I've always loved it for some reason. How do you like the Blackstar? I considered buying one at one point before I decided to convert my Peavey C30 combo to a head with 2x12 cab.

Mr.C: I like it considering what it cost, it was pretty cheap really for an amp. The clips I posted yesterday were with a new cab I bought, & it distorts a lot easier with that cab/speaker than the stock Blackstar. Another thing about the clips from yesterday, is the gain was pretty low (for me), with the volume up almost full, trying to get the power tube saturation thing going on.......

All in all, for what I paid for the amp itself, it's pretty decent. Not a Marshall by any means, but you gotta figure the cost too......

I'll have some more clips tomorrow evening/night, gonna tear all this shit down, & get ready to load it up for tomorrow's adventure......

Hey ido1957, really like your music and the tone your getting from that Marshall. Are all the songs original? Nice classic rock feel to them. It's funny as I listened to "Overtime" I noticed you said you were playing lead on your EC sig model. The leads sounded a little EC to me! By the way are you singing or someone else. Good voice.

So, neck pick ups.
Anybody use 'em?

Here are a couple well known examples:
Is this good, tone?

Here's a couple that switch in and out of neck position during the solo.
Is it worth it?

With few exceptions, I always use the neck pickups. That's with single pole or humbuckers.

I really like the solos that switch back and forth, I'm going to remember to use that.
I'm learning that I like the neck pick up in general, I've been thinking to narrowly myself when it comes to tone.

While we're at it:
The middle pickup on my Strat never gets used. :p

I know that there are some that do use it.
A female country star for one, I can't remember her name.

Here's a few tones I recorded Thursday, while at the church I mentioned before. I actually got to crank the amp & not worry about pissing anyone off. :) That said, the tones I got "on tape" aren't that good really (to me anyway), I think I can get as good/better sounds here at home. But I did get to run my HT-5 through a 4x12 cab, & it sounded pretty good, & is a lot louder than I ever imagined being 5 watts......The cab is an old Carvin 4x12, with stock speakers that I don't think sound all that great myself. I think my next buy will be a 4x12 Celestion cab, instead of another 1x12.....

The other amps I was gonna get to try out didn't work out. The Carvin 100w head I mentioned, the tubes are shot in it, I did get to play through it a little, but the sound kept cutting in/out, most likely due to bad tubes. They're the originals that came in the amp, from the 80's :laughings:....

The only other amp that was there, was a Marshall Micro-Stack, solid state, 15 watter (there was supposed to be a couple more amps there, but weren't...). I didn't even bother plugging it in.....

I did get quite a bit done on some songs I've been working on, & actually got to record my 13 year old niece singing/playing one of her original songs (which was actually the best part of the whole day), but I'm gonna save that until I'm done with it......

There's no processing on these clips at all, no eq or anything. They are quite fizzy, flubby, & dark to my ears, but could be used in a mix I suppose.....The volume on the amp was dimed on all these clips, with different settings for the gain, bass, mid, treble & ISF.....

Wow, nice stuff minerman. I personally like the LP + Greenback stuff the best.

Real nice. Those Scumbacks interest me a lot. I need to research them things.

How go the Terrortones auditions?

Lol. Not good. I haven't tried or even looked for anyone else. It's something I'd like to do, but just the logistics of starting a new band with me as head honcho seems like a pain in the ass.

Thanks Greg,
Like I said, the tones didn't turn out as good as I hoped, but I suppose they'll work in a mix.....thanks again!!!

I'm working on the song by my niece, trying to get it finished up before I go back to work Monday, if/when, I'll post it here in the forum so you guys can hear it.......

Thanks again!!!

Hey Sam, I use the neck pickup on my strat quite a bit. But I do switch up to 2nd position, middle position, and sometimes the 4th position, and only occasionally use the bridge pickup. I think how your amp projects the sound of your guitar will determine which pickups you use also...on a trebly amp the bridge pickup justs boosts that treble. IMHO.
