The New Tone Thread

I have an old ProCo Rat pedal. Supposedly it's one of the lower serial number good ones. Bought it in like 89-90 maybe? I haven't touched it in like 10 years. I'm gonna give it a try. I used to use it all the time back in the day when all I had was combo amps and shit. My Strat into the Rat into a clean channel SS amp was punk rock fury! :laughings:

Loves me some Trower - that ain't it. :D

Sounded cool though. You're right, you could use it. Trower was all neck pup and raging Marshall with some trembalo for taste and a little wah as well. The key to his sound is neck and neck/mid. I'm not sure he ever used bridge. He did mess with some flange and rotary shit as well from time to time. The Fool and Me has some strange tone in it.

Oh man Lou, I do know this ain't no Trower tone man, just fooling around getting in the ballpark with my new toys.....it's a big fucking ball park though......:D I'm gonna have to dig deep to try to get close to one or two of my heroes' tones I suppose. Dunno if it'll be possible or not with the Blackstar, I mean, it sounds good for what it is, but the more I think/listen/play/tweak, the more the word "MARSHALL" pops up....Not the "toys" I've been talking about buying (the low wattage models)......I really don't wanna "ape" anyone's tones/sounds, but some of 'em I like a lot, & it'd be nice to get kinda close to 'em anyway......

Back to Trower, didn't he use the Uni-Vibe a to get a lot of those tones??? I'm gonna do some research on him, & I'll get back to ya on this.....But, one more thing, I bet Trower could give me his rig, & I'd still sound like me, where he could use my rig, & it'd still sound like him......

Thanks for the listen(s) guys, I appreciate it......I'll have more clips Thursday evening/night after I get home from the "session" :laughings: at the church......

Yes please...

Finally got the new cab today, & this is the first time I've mic'd it up, so it probably sucks.

Oh wow, that's cool!
I'm really getting a sense now of what these greenback 12m's sound like.
They are classic rock.

Here's another tone for today
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11744719[/URL]

I'm really glad to hear some modeler stuff.
I had fun taking my gear down and recording it,
but practically speaking I'm going to be
relegated to using mine a lot for recorded tones.

I'll put some up.

The other day I played around with a Rat, a Timmy and a BBE Freq Boost (whicxh has a vintage treble booster circuit).
The Rat is great if you want to sound like your blowing the place up!

Sam: Thanks for the listen, the second clip is my POD's distortion into the HT-5, then I added some ampsim/modeler effects to it in the daw, so I guess you could call it half & half....one half fake shit, the other half real shit......:laughings:

The Greenback's sound kinda surprised me actually. I thought it'd be a lot cleaner, more detailed to be honest. Hell, it distorts with my amp's gain on 2.....but that's ok too, I really don't use a lot of clean sounds in my stuff, & I still have the clean channel to play with. But again, the Greenback really surprised me when I first hooked it up.....

Just guessing, I'd say it'll take a little while to break in too, to be honest, I'd say the speaker in my amp isn't totally broken in yet....

Greg: Gimme a little time dude, I make good money here, but I'm in debt up to my eyeballs....I will have an amp that has "that" sound eventually though, gonna stop fucking with the little, low watters, & set my sights on what I'm really after. May take me a little while though, but again, I will get it....

A little off-topic here, but it feels just fucking great not to have to go to work this week, I've got 5 more days of this shit, & I'm loving every minute of it!!!!!!

You guys can call me Bill if you like, it's my name and that "Sam" is getting kinda weird to respond to (but whatever is fine).

I figured I was getting it wrong with that second clip, it was a bit of a confusing signal chain!

Greg, me too dude man, more time, I'm fucking broke! :p

I think a full size Marshall is in my future, but it is going to be a while now,
I can't get it without selling my case to my better half.

OTOH, I think the Vox has a lot of potential,
I just need to learn how to use it correctly
with gain boosting and reverb, etc. pedals.

The greenback is a smooth sounding speaker, I really like it.
I wouldn't call it mushy, but it is definitely "soft."
The alnico in my Vox is super efficient and "hard."

I don't know you very well minerman, but I know enough
to be really happy for you that you are getting a well deserved break.
Enjoy your time off!

I just picked up some tutorials on ProTools and Maschine,
I'm struggling too hard with this stuff.
They're Groove3 and so far I'm optimistic that they
will help me get a mix completed.

Working on learning it tonight...

Now..., how long (or what) does it take to break in a speaker?

I hope this isn't off base but you guys are talking about Greenbacks and I have several including some Scumbacks (h75,m75,bm75).

Here's my PRS 305 into a Grease Monkey and driving a fairly new pair of Scumback BM75s. The tone is just on the verge of breakup and I really love the percussive feel of this.

PRS 305 -> Grease Monkey -> BM75 -> r121

not sure what you mean by off base but this is exactly the kind of clip the tone thread is for. nakid guitar where you can clearly hear the tone and someone just sitting and screwing around on git so you get a feel of a human being doing it.

And you're right ..... that's a great tone. A little too much breakup for me ..... I prefer a pristine clean that stays that way no matter what. BUT ..... this is a GREAT 'tweed' sorta clean and would be the holy grail for players who like a little breakup so they can control it with the git's volume control.

SAM ....... just learn to answer to Sam ..... it IS your name .... it's your screen name. And the majority of people are just gonna call you that. A few will remember your real name is Bill but only the guys that interact with you regularly.
My name isn't Bob, for instance ....... it's Steve. But everyone calls me Bob ( or boob ) and even the guys that know my name isn't Bob call me that. I know hundreds of people online ..... can't remember two names for all of them.

This is very true. Just go by Sam. If you wanted to be called Bill online, you shoulda used that as your screen name. Like Boob said, his name is Boob! :D

I've been to meat world gatherings of online people and everyone called eachother by their screen name, or some variation of it. It was odd. That thing alone really stuck with me. People calling eachother by their internet names. My screen name is Greg so it's easy, but people in here call me "Gerg" or "Greggles" and sure enough, those mongos called me that in real life just as naturally as if it were my real name. No big deal. There were two other guys named Mike and Dan, but everyone called them by their internet names - Zed and Lucky. Ed was Dogman no matter what. It's a strange thing when the internet world and real world collide. Just go with Sam. Sammy. Sambo. Samalamadingdong. :D

I'm definitely gonna listen to this later. I'm very interested in Scumbacks.

not sure what you mean by off base but
IDk, it seems most clips in this thread have been modelers and higher gain. Maybe I've missed a lot.

I prefer a pristine clean that stays that way no matter what.
my ears wouldn't let me :) though the amp does clean up very nicely with the gtr volume.

Thanks for checking.

.
well, this thread is really a continuation of the 250 page 'tone to die for' thread where most of the tones were NOT modelers.
Regardless ..... it's about tone however you make it.
It's not about playing skillz either ....... comments on that are off limits except for when we want to ooh and ah about it.
The amps have tended to sound better than the modelers although there have been a few modelers that fooled us.

You have a pretty bad ass amp collection BTW.

Thanks. Yeah, I never criticize one's playing... I just won't comment. I'm not a fan of typing so that really limits my response :laughings:

Sonixx: Very nice tone man, I had to search for the PRS 305, because it had such a Fender-ish sound, I now know why, single coils....Nice fat tone, with a jangly top end that's great man.....

Like Bob said, most of the tones here have been amps, I just used the modeler stuff in the clip yesterday honestly, because it's all I have. I don't have any pedals at all, only the POD X3Live, so I used it for a boost on the clean channel of my amp.....And, I used the rotary speaker sim from a modeler in the daw, because, it's all I have....

High gain, low gain, amp, modeler, it really doesn't matter in this thread, that's what I like about this particular thread too. A very good place to get some feedback from others to help make our tones better....

Sounds to me like you don't need much help though, sounds great, as usual........:guitar:
