mr. green christmas
Hey, here is my latest effort that I pieced together over the last few weeks.

I think the mix sounds pretty good. I guess the song itself is kind of unexciting, but I think I like it...not sure yet. Please give it a listen if you get a chance and let me know what you think.

Here is a dropbox link for 320 mp3:

Or, if you prefer soundclick:

SoundClick artist: kingseesar - the rising tide

Or, perhaps soundcloud is more your thing?

Thanks,

Very nice Pete

its got one of your originals written all over it, less quirky than some, more straight up I think

you have a real meat to your mixes, what I mean is nothing ever sounds thin, all the instruments have a real chunk to them...loved the bass as per and the whole melody fits into that kinda melancholy, "cant be arsed with the world" attitude, your songs conjure up to me

on the second listen I read the wiki entry on Prometheus while I listened and i bopped my head and tapped my toe all the way through

seriously...album...get it together :)

Dude this is another example of why I was asking you about your bass. You really push the bass hard and it makes the mix. It FILLS the room but it's so well defined, works great with the kick and absolutely makes the song. When I first heard the opening I was thinking of the middle 8 of that tune they're watching from my birthday cd where I got all my kids to sing that la la la la la la la la la la melody. But man you took this tune to places that I would love to go and couldn't get if you drew me a map. I love the guitar parts and the interplay.

I was also listening to kcearls latest where I thought he had an absolutely KILLER bass and then gerg mentioned something about pushing it even more and I was scratching my head - but when I listened to his second mix the bass started to do the same thing - float up out and fill the room, but again well defined.

Anyway - I have a version of mechanical dream that I added a bass part to last night - mixed with the sawtooth and a kalimba and I'm pushing the living shit out of the bass and will post it shortly and it makes it an entirely different tune - though maybe FAIL - I also did some other WWHD based customizations

I agree with kcearl. Your latest mixes always have a rich deep analog sounding low end that never gets muddy. Very, very well done in that regard. Your mixes in general have improved vastly over your earlier stuff. I'd even venture to say that you've outgrown the MP3clinic. Please keep posting, but you don't need any help anymore! This sounds fantastic to me.

lol @ WWHD. I would've probably said "good enough" and moved on...;)

The new mix/version sounds great. Probably my favorite tune of yours so far.

Thanks for listening and for the good word on the bass. It is awfully loud, but I think I get away with here at least. As mentioned previosuly, I use a crappy $100 bass and a cheapo behri preamp as kind of a DI box. Each tune is completely different, but I almost always use a lot of comp and EQ to mess around with the bass and get it where I think it works. On this one, a last minute bump of 1-2 db at 80hz actually fattened it up considerably without seeming to add too much rumble. On another tune, that same bump could be horrible. I dunno.

I listened to "they're watching" (catchy tune - cool guitars) again last night and didn't pick up on the similarity, but I'm not even too sure what a middle 8 is ??

Sorry, I don't think I can be arsed with an album (did I use that correctly?). It sounds like a lot of work! I don't think more than a handful of people might be interested. Not sure what else to do with all of these tunes though.

The melodies are all so simple. I fear that my work is now actually kind of derivative of my previous stuff which is kind of sad when you start ripping off yourself. I like the sound here, I guess I just wish I had more to say musically.

Thanks so much for continuing to offer encouragement. It really helps. This is a much more fun place to be when you're around.

That is awesome Greg. Thanks so much although I don't necessarily agree. I feel I am constantly on the edge of mix suckdom. This is the only place anyone gets to hear this stuff, so I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

Hard to believe it's been 6 years since I stumbled upon this site thinking I'd take the homerecording world by storm with my cassette tracks. Although I still don't understand any of the more advanced techniques discussed here from time to time, I have gotten great, general advice over the years that has steered me in the right direction to tightening things up.

You, perhaps above all others, have consistently provide clear, candid and helpful advice for which I can't thank you enough!

You

You're very welcome, and thank you too.

And don't sweat it, I don't understand most of the complicated shit that gets thrown around in here either. Just keep it simple dude. It's definitely working for us. :)

Awesome. Great song, great instrumentation, vocals sound great, drums are perfect for this. There is such an analog, everyone playing in the same room feel to it. But at the same time, it doesn't sound anything near what I'd call lo-fi. It sounds old-school state of the art. Very cool.

I dont think of it as derivative at all...i think its your style, the bastard child of the grateful dead and beck...tbh if you strayed too much from it i prolly wouldnt enjoy it as much

Maybe even getting a webpage where people could download the album in 320kbps form wouldnt be a great hassle?...stick a paypal "pay what you want button"....but really I dont care, i get to listen to your tracks when they are fresh but you are one of the very few id listen to outside of an HR context...maybe ill make a bootleg lol

Its more fun for me too hanging out here...ive been at Harmony Central for a while but ive quit my addiction, it was Gregs fault :D

Yay! Thanks Rami. That is all good with me. Your description is very flattering and pretty much how I'd like to sound I think...

Ok, thanks dude. I probably won't stray too much despite my concerns. There's only so much I can seem to think of doing despite what should be endless possible combinations...

We definitely fire up your tunes here from time to time simply for listening pleasure, which is not something I do a whole lot with homerecordings, much as I like them.

The web site/download idea sounds easier maybe...

Y'know, I've never even visited other recording sites. I found this one back in '06 and was simply amazed that there were thousands of other people enjoying the same hobby (oh, the wonders of the modern information age), some of whom were producing such amazing results, it was really inspiring. I think this site, for all it's flaws, is enough for me.

Hey heat - well the bass is to die for on this one in particular. The WWHD has kind of taken on a life of it's own with me - I just got such a chuckle out of the jesus hates me thread :-) I hear you on what works for one tune may not work for another - man that is the thing that bugs me most about bass - the total randomness of the results I get.

Dude - I don't know what the heck a middle 8 is either other than the beatles were constantly talking about it - but It's the eight bars where my kids are all going 'la la la la la la la la la la' after I'm done caterwhauling. It just slightly reminds me of the intro to your tune :-)

I'm going to redo the drums, bass and mix on they're watching cause I think it deserves better - I think I'm going to be a lifelong revisionist of the same 15 songs and that is going to be my personal hell on earth.

I really liked it. Yeah not many mix comments to make. It sounded great.

Caught a pitchy note at :33 on the word "Live" (I think that's what it was).

everything else was great.

This sounds very good. I like all the individual sounds and the mix in general is simple(though it's really not) and clean sounding. My only nit-pick is I thought the level of the vocal dropped a bit into the mix from the second verse on. Amazingly this song reminds me of our own chuckduffys music and sound, which is a compliment! Good song, enjoyable listen.

WWHD? Apparently he would rip off your song ;)!

I just listened again to that part and although there's obviously different tones and tempo, it is awfully similar.

See you in court!

Awesome. Thanks MMM. I think there are actually a lot of pitch issues throughout. On that exact part my voice also gave out a little and I remember thinking I should start over (it's right near the beginning), but I was like "oh, it will just add character"...what a dumbass. This was the first and only lead vocal take on this tune and I think I walked away once again thinking..."nailed it!" only to realize days later that it was pitchy. By then I'd forgotten all of the settings I'd used and was so happy with the vocal processing that I left it as is. Thanks again - looking forward to another tune from you.

Great, thanks Strat. Yes, I consider that a compliment, so thank you. Apparently it reminds you of his music with good reason - see above ;)

Heat - i REALLY SINCERELY hope that you don't think that I was noting anything more than it reminded me of a fragment of one of my songs. I also know that I'm feeling pretty darn unconfortable about being used as a compliment - maybe it's turnabout as fair play for my raving and ranting on your jesus hates you thread :-) I really like the rising tide, the lyrics, the sound, the meloncholy mood it sets and the images it gives off when I listen to it. Your song is so heat it's like heat doing heat.

Really cool Pete - great tune yet again and lots of fantastic textures. I particularly like the interplay of the two panned electric guitars. The drums have really come together since the first mix where you moved over from the drum machine too.

Only issue I had was with some kind of shaker that you've used throughout the song that i find a bit distracting as it sounds to me a bit like a rustling crisp packet more than adding anything. Nobody else has picked up on it, so maybe it's just me or maybe I'm being picky to keep your ego grounded :p

What's WWHD by the way?

WWHD = "What Would Heat Do?" - It's a play on the acronym WWJD = "What Would Jesus Do?" - used on goofy bumper stickers and the like. It started with me goofing on heats 'Jesus Hates You' thread.

Oh right, ha! I've never seen anything along the lines here - but having said that, I think Jesus admitted defeat and withdrew gracefully from England a while ago. Christianity is more of a pastime than a defining force where it is still in existence...
