Hey - I'd love to see if anyone has any feedback on this one. It may not sound like it, but I did a lot of things differently this time around.

For one, there are two complete drum tracks (ala allman bros. or grateful dead - although the music isn't like them at all) panned somewhat to either side as if there were two drummers. The drums were also processed more heavily this time and I really like the difference myself.

Also, kind of embarassing, but I just figured out how to bounce tracks and route groups to FX on my Roland recorder, so I did a bunch of submixes here which I've never done before. Certainly makes final mixdown easier, but at the cost of some flexibility.

It's kind of an angry sounding song, which is a bit different for me. Seems like I couldn't get out of my own way on the soloing towards the end, but it was close to how I wanted it anyway:

Dude that is absolutely inspired. I love it, all of it, expecially the drums and the solos.
 
Well I for one love the title and subject matter, but I'm not sure how it's going to play with most, ya know? I like the song, too. Kind of lazy and aggressive at the same time. You have some good soloing chops, friend. Keep it up dude, I'd jam it.

Awesome. Thanks chuck. I spent a lot of time on the drums and while not quite where I want them, I think I'm getting closer each time.

Yes, believe me I thought about that. I could easily have changed a few words and the title and been on much safer ground, but it isn't like I have too much to lose. It's not like I have to worry about alienating a fan base or anything ;).

Thanks for the good word man. I am not much a guitarist really, so it is encouraging to get positive feedback there.

I don't really like the two drum tracks, but that's just me. I'm sure others may love them! :D It may just be the sound of the snare actually, and not the two drum tracks themselves.

Thanks. I'm glad you like it.

Yeah, I don't know why I went with two, but I do like it. I think normally you'd want two drummers who did different, but complimentary parts, or maybe two identical, tight performances. I did neither. These are two different takes (both done before any music had taken shape) just bounced together. I thought the snare sound was kind of cool, but I guess it could be more lively sounding? Thanks again.
 
don't touch the snare, I beg you. it's a taste thing. for the type of sound I think your going for it's awesome. i spent almost 4 hours friday night trying to get close to a snare ala hello goodbye, and got nowhere. you've got two!

I usually always like a VERY thick snare. Apparently others like the snare quite a bit, so I wouldn't change it. Like chuckduffy said, it's a taste thing.

Ha! I don't know about that, but I sure love me some magical mystery tour - so anything approaching that is going to be good with me.

Ok, cool. This is a little on the papery thin side maybe. I used an cheap, old 1980's AKG dynamic mic which has a very mid-rangey, alomst lo fi sound to it. I prefer it to a 57 for snare for some reason.
 
Excellent. Something different, but still has the Heat-feel to it. I think the two drums work here, but not something you should always do. You certainly kept them more homogenous than the Allman Bros or GD. I like that and it comes across as more musical than a gimmick. I always hated when dual drummers didn't work out their parts with each other. Each drummer in AB and GD would do their own thing without regard for the other drummer.

Vox on the verses could come up a tad. Leave the Jesus Hates You vox parts as they are. Is that you preaching before the solo??? ha ha ha

Cool song. I'm not crazy about the dual drums, but I guess it works here. Check out some of The Melvins later stuff. They use two bombastic drummers and it sounds pretty cool. This one doesn't have the fat low end that your usuall offerings do, so I feel that it's missing something compared to your other songs. I've never done dual drums panned wide like this, but I'm thinking that my ears and mind are telling me that I want to hear the kicks maybe panned closer to the center. Maybe that will help balance it out some.
 
Good, good, good! I love it. It's sounds (from what I know) kind of Beck-ish.
I love the samples audio in the middle as well. It's very nicely done.

Thanks Chili. The homogeneity is out of necessity rather than design. Truth be told, if I was capable of much more on the drums, there probably would have been a whole lot more going on. Since these were two separate takes done before any music was in place, they came out pretty similar. I don't know that I'll do this again, but I'm glad I tried it at least once. I've always been curious...

Not sure about AB, but I really think Billy and Mickey tried to link up all the time, they (Mickey in particular) were just so willing to explore that sometimes it would kind of fall apart. It was always a risk/reward kind of thing there. When they were locked in like in the late 60's through 1970, it just sounded awesome.

The preacher is a guy who recently intorduced Santorum at a rally or something. He was basically saying that this is a Christian country, and if you're a Buddhist or Muslim or something, you should just get out. He got a standing O from Rick and all others in attendance. I found the clip on youtube, queued it up, dragged a condensor mic through a few rooms and placed it in front of the pc. I called out to my son to hit play just when I hit record on the Roland. There's probably a better way of doing that...:o

That's too bad about the low end. Ironically, this all started as an attempt to beef up that area, the kick specifically. I had an LDC sounding pretty good down there and wanted to whip up a tune to see how it sounded in a mix, but then I decided to use two drum parts (?) and now it's kind of apples and oranges, you know? I'll try this same set up with just one set of drums next time and see how it sounds. I tracked with 4 mics, then mixed each 4-track take down to stereo to free up tracks. I then panned one channel of each stereo take wide and the other closer to the center

I thought the kick and bass were too much throughout this recording process and did quite a few cuts in that area towards the end. Maybe I went too far. Thanks for listening and for the advice Greg.

Thanks Adam. I'm really glad you like it. I have never created am album, no. I haven't really had enough original material before. This year I seem to be on pace for about one song a month, so maybe by the end of the year I'd have enough?...we shall see. Thanks again!
 
Heat, I think this is terrific. I've heard this and KC's today and you've both upped your game of late. Love the drum sound - sounds like a definite step up from when I heard them on Paper Cup (I think).

Everything about it is very cool musically and lyrically - only thing I thought (and in contrast to Chili) was that the Jesus Hates You line was a little too low. It was like you felt braver proclaiming this statement when writing the lyrics than you did when you came to mix it!

This is up there with yer Death Ray and Telephone Wire tunes for me :D

Thanks rob! I had that line louder but lowered it for this mix. Seemed like strictly a production decision at the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if subconciously I was trying to hedge my bets!

Yeah, I thought KCs new track was killer. He just keeps getting bigger sounds and I don't know where it goes from here, but I want to hear.

In all fairness, telephone wire was written by a friend of mine, but he never recorded a decent version of it, and mine is cassette/drum machine vintage, so maybe I'll have another go at that one some time soon...hmmm.
 
man this is excellent Pete...I liked it all, it sounds like one of yours from the off

great lyrics, the drums were odd but groovy, some great guitar chops...I never knew you played this well??


the whole mix seems more polished, Id agree with Rob, you've upped your game...I obviously respect and admire a few folks in here but you are one of the few artists Id happily have blaring in my car with the windows open, very Beck with a real 60's vibe
 
Not too shabby, Pete! The sound of this song is definitley in a league of its own. I found myself grooving to it, which means that it worked for me. If it didn't, I'd be focusing on the drums instead of the song. Ya know, I wouldn't change a thing. Have a very unique feel to it, and that's pretty hard to get now-a-days, man. Great job (and good drumming performance, too!)

Awesome dude - I love that fat bass synth sound you got in there (wtf is that anyway? is that a guitar? or a synth?) - that's pretty sick.

Backing vocals are awesome too.

Great tune man, nice job. I like the wide panned drums.
