Thinking of upgrading to Tascam 2488 neo - but I have specific questions. Please help

Awesome, thanks again all for the input, everyone! It has been a HUGE help. I'm getting ready to finally hit the "go" button and order this thing.

Final question for now: can the USB port only be used for PC transfer, or can you plug in something like a thumb drive to "grab" something quick?

I love my neo - same as for RAMI, I use it primarily to track, and then I mix on a laptop hooked up to external monitors. Though, to send scratch mixes out to people, I use the basic internal effects (the occassional compressor and the built-in reverb). They are totally passable, and I've produced some pretty good mixes even if I use a PC for final mixes.

Incidentally, it looks like the neo has been discontinued and now there is a newly revamped edition:

When I bought mine 6 months ago, I thought "Man, this thing has a calculator screen from 1983 and it uses an internal EIDE hard drive, a very outdated technology at this point".... and then they discontinue the model that's essentially been the same internally for 10 years, and release this total refresh. Probably much more portable now that its thinner and uses flash memory, which is not susceptible to shakes and bumps like a mechanical hard drive is.

(Note: just to clarify, mechanical hard drives are not outdated, the EIDE interface is - even the 2488neo uses an EIDE drive internally, which I only found out when researching how to possibly upgrade the size of the drive by swapping in a different drive)

The DP-24 (which just replaced the 2488neo within the last few months) works the same as the 2488neo, and only allows connection to a PC (to the best of my knowledge - especially since it is a USB-B connector, and no USB thumb drive has that connector type)

Gahhh, they would do that, wouldn't they, now that I finally bit the bullet and ordered my NEO. Classic!

But I am a bit skeptical of SD card storage. I have my doubts that it's more stable than an optical drive. The biggest improvement on the DP24 to me looks to be the physical knobs for pan and EQ...

I am a bit jealous of the separate knobs for EQ and pan - while they are obviously digital, controlling the values in the software, it is nice to have separate, more commonly-sized dials for those functions.

As for SD card storage, it should prove just as reliable as a magnetic hard disk, with the added benefit of not being susceptible to vibration or bumps to the system during use or transport. I've lightly bumped mechanical hard disk drives in tranport which ultimately destroyed them, whereas I've dropped my digital camera on concrete (uses SD memory cards like any digital camera), and it keeps on ticking.

they are still missing it !!! no VGA out ..end of story. but in all a great machine 3 years running strong... and the mastering section is the 11
