Clearing the Home

I had a daughter when I was 17 who is now 20, and another step-daughter who is going to turn 20 later this month. The last one I mentioned has a one yr old daughter herself. All this, in addition to the wifee. When everyone's over here, forgetaboutit.

As far as helping me out, my 13 yr. old plays trumpet, and just last night I got the idea of using him on a song I'm doing pre-production on. I'm thinking a melody line in the ballpark of Blondie's "The Tide is High" would work nicely.

Wow, yea you got your hands full there! My kids are 12-7 and 6. They now realize that if they come downstairs to ask me for something they may get put to work! Sometimes they enjoy it and sometimes they regret it or just get bored quickly. At any rate it has helped. I can deal with the noise for the most part but the interruptions are what really slow things down. Good luck with that trumpet part!

I have no friends, so this doesn't happen.... :laughings:

Actually, the think I always forget is to turn off the fridge when I'm recording acoustic. As for how much time you need, when you add it up it may not be much, but if you're dodging noises it can take forever, what with all the other general noise around.

I was recording two tracks of acoustic guitar for a song I'm really well rehearsed on and which isn't particularly difficult, last night. Took me two hours to get good enough takes and do a bit of comping.

Had I had casual noise from children and spouses to deal with I never would have got it done.

Become a hermit, I reckon.... :laughings:
 
*Reclusive studios* - that's gonna be the name of my recording room in the house from now on!

It's an all weather, year round porch.

But it's just for me and a few friends to hang out and create.
 
I myself put a fire door at the bottom of the basement stairs (the entry to my studio cave). I ask nicely for quiet time. If that is disrupted, allowance is not given for the week. Conveniently tho, my control room is at the opposite end of my house from bedrooms.

One time, one of the boys forgot while I was tracking vocals. A sudden pounding of club music became disruptive. He was unable to afford his nugs that week. He needs a job and his own place anyway soon. Almost 18 and not a clue! He gonna have to get one real quick tho.....
 
The phone is a killer, for sure! If you've got a mobile, turn it off to stop that irritating dit-dididit-dididit noise it creates.
 
I'm luckily enough to a have a specific home studio room where I can shut the door for quiet, but, I've got two black labs that think that their play time is whenever I'm in that room. (I made the mistake of playing ball with them when playing in there one day and now they think my time is their time. So they sit outside the door and whine...) So now if I want absolute quiet, I tire out the dogs first so theyre sleeping, make sure the wife knows I'm heading to the studio, close the door and try to record. I usually do the first scratch track regardless of noise, and then come back later when the house is fairly quiet. But as others of said, how often do you need absolute quiet? Thats the great part about RTZ. Thats the one button I'll wear out faster then all others...heh..

About 15 years ago, I recorded this song and when I listened to the playback, I realized that the phone had rung. But the feel was so right that I left it in. To this day because I don't hear the song much, whenever I listen to it, where the opening organ ends and the acoustic guitar comes in, I go to answer the phone !

Often a good idea. My kids love the idea of me recording and they love to help out. The day I got my oldest {he's 10} to lay down a euphonium blast or got him to play the pitch pipe, he was walking on air.
