Alesis Multixmix 8 USB FX recognition and Cubase problems

I recently got a hold of a Multimix 8 usb FX and, already, I'm lost.

I plug it into my laptop which is a HP G72, 6gb, i3 running Windows 7. It installs the new hardware found but when I look for it I can't find it anywhere. The only thing I can find is the USB Audio Codec under Sound and Hardware.

When I open Cubase 5 (not LE5, the full edition) the only way I can get the program to find the alesis is by selecting "USB Audio Codec" as the Asio device. But, ultimately what is happening when I do this is the sound from the computer is being passed through the Alesis into my headphones and sound being recorded is going from the alesis into the computer as if the alesis is an external microphone/are external microphones. Is this what is supposed to be happening? Because, with that happening... first of all, I still can't get any sound to record in Cubase (but I can in Audacity for some reason) but if I could get it to record on Cubase I can still only do it through one track. So it's as if the Alesis is one big external microphones recording the guitars/mics/everything all at once onto one track. I don't know how to split each channel to different tracks on Cubase?!

So first what I'm asking is..... is the Alesis supposed to come up as the USB Audio Codec? If not than how can I get the computer to recognize it as an "Alesis Multimix 8" ? And how can I get to computer to recognize the different channels on the alesis and record them on different tracks?

Sorry if I'm making no sense. I'm a complete newbie to all of this.

The older USB multimix would only send the stereo out main mix via USB, along with a stereo mix return. The alesis SHOULD essentially be used as an external usb mic--albeit one with Lots of controls; and yes-- it should show as "USB Audio Codec".

In Cubase- you should go to the Devices menu, then open "VST Connections". At a minimum, you should be able to see the separate Left and Right tracks of the stereo mix from the alesis. Try adding a mono bus, then click on the "Device Port" section to see what is available for you to assign.

I would do what you suggested above only I have run into yet another problem. This ones worse.

Plugged the mixer out last night and today I plug it back in. But this time..... nothing. The computer makes that "budu" noise to signal that something has been plugged into it. But when I got to cubase or Sound in the control panel, no USB Audio Codec comes up anymore! What did I do wrong? Should I leave it plugged in at all times? Did I pull the plug out without removing hardware on the computer first? I don't get how it doesn't recognize it now and it did last night. I am going to restart the computer leaving the multimix plugged in and see if that works.

Ignore my last post, I fixed the problem.

I did what you said and all I'm getting when I add a mono bus is "Microphone (2-USB Aduio COD 1)" or "Microphone (2-USB Audio COD 2)" .... But this is the microphone I have plugged in and am using already. What if I want more tracks? Am I only able to record the one at a time? Because that's what it is looking like.

No. You can record two mono tracks. If you have a vocal mic and a guitar mic, pan one hard LEFT and the other hard RIGHT. Now you have 2 clean and separate tracks to record with. Add two channels to your workspace, and assign LEFT ["Microphone (2-USB Aduio COD 1)"] to one and RIGHT [ "Microphone (2-USB Audio COD 2)"] to the other. :)

Brilliant! Thanks a lot!
