........funk you, go funk yourself......and all those other stupid cliches someone uses when they have a funky tune. :D

This is the first tune I do from beginning to end in my new place. I've posted a few tunes that I re-mixed here, but this one was tracked, mixed, and "mastered" here.

I usually put tunes up too early, but this one is REALLY early. I just finished mixing a few minutes ago. So, there might be major level issues. Sometimes I hear the drums and bass too loud, and sometimes I think I need to bring them up. I always find my vocals too loud, but that's just because I'm never crazy about my voice.

So, any help is always appreciated. I know I'll have to go back and re-mix probably a couple of times.

Thanx

SAY NO MORE

For anyone that cares.....the lyrics.......

Say No More (words and music by RAMI)

Ain't got the Bard's grammar I can't spell 2B whore knot too bee
I got dry sarcasm I mean that ironically
Ain't got high learning can't rock no rocket surgery
I got too high while learning I got high anxiety

Chorus:
Don't stagger my swagger when I get home
Just flatter my chatter and say no more

Ain't got High-Karate got more Ka-razy than I need
I got Illuminati kicking me right in the teeth so please

Chorus:
Don't stagger my swagger when I get home
Don't slander my banter don't spoil the show
Your pretense I make sense still turns me on
Just flatter my chatter and say no more
Please say no more

I got the whole world turning while the whole world burns and turns on me

Chorus:
Don't stagger my swagger when I get home
Don't slander my banter don't spoil the show
Let's discuss my genius it turns me on
Just flatter my chatter and say no more
Please say no more no more please say no more

Wow - tight punchy and FUNKAY.... love it!
There's quite a bit of reverb diference on the chorus/verse vocals.
My only vote would be add a bit more reverb to the verse vocals.
Great tune/recording/mix!

I'm not supposed to listen/critique to songs outside of my genre in here, but I'm gonna anyway. Sounds real cool. I like the interplay between the left and right guitars. Drums, bass, and vocals sound great. I'm really liking the snare sound you got here. Overheads sound good too. I'm thinking that new space agrees with you. My only critique would be the guitars. I think they're a little thin sounding and too low in the mix. If you don't wanna re-track, maybe finding some meat in the low mids of the guitars could fatten them up a little. And I think all the guitar tracks could be boosted a good 1-2 full db's. Overall a good tune. Just enough funk without sounding ridiculous. Well done! :)

Great thanx Ido!

It's not that there's more reverb in the chorus vocals. It's that the chorus has 8 tracks of vocals doing a "chant" type of thing. I had the verse vocals wetter, but I was going for a more raw sound there. I'll sit on it for a few day and maybe realize you're right. :)

Your critiques are always right on, whether it's your type of music or not, man.

I got no problem bringing up the guitars. That might be why I thought the drums and bass might be too loud. Thanx man!

We're not supposed to critique outside our genre anymore.... So I also broke the rules because it's not a love song. lol now back to our regularly scheduled program :D:D:D:D

When someone else finally posts mentally-retarded punk crap, I'll be all over it!

I've noticed that the layering of vocal (backups) does give them a chorus effect and some depth. Yours do have that trait too I guess.... Natural Chorus :D

I'm just commenting in genre'al!
Very clever verses RAMI!
Reminds me of the pun a builder told me once - he said that all carpenters learnt the classics in their apprenticeship which is why they know their Joist, (Joyce), from their Girder, (Goethe).
Obvioulsy a smart chippy!
Nice funky piece of rock. The stacked vocals work well - you certainly sing well with yourself.
Excellent rhythm section.
I agree with Greg that a little more meat in the guitars would go well with the potatoes of the rhythm section.
Cool stuff!

First thing I noticed (and this may be from the new studio headphones I got) is that the vocals are a lot clearer than usual. Quite a bit more bite to em'. The snare sounds much more crisp and less boxy. Very tight sound all around, as usual. I really enjoyed this tune, too. I think it sounds very balanced except for one part. Due to the chorus'ing of the chorus, I think the vocals could come down a bit during the choruses. Probably only around 1db. Other than that, I think it sounds awesome.

Great job, and congrats on the new sound! I think it's an overall improvement, for sure.

Thanx Ray. Glad it's working. I'm not crazy about my vocal performance in the verses. But I think it's because, in my head, I hear James Brown singing this, and in reality I hear myself singing it and it just doesn't match up.

Thanx a lot PI. Yeah, I'm still tinkering with the balance between the vocals in the verse and chorus. I'll tweek it a bit and get it right sooner or later. :D

Rami ..... Dude!
You're one of the few that i always listen to whatever you put up because I know it'll kick.
This is no exception ....... cool tune .... cool lyrics and a good recording.
i'm with greg on the guitar volumes ..... could come up a smidge.
I love me some funk and this be funkay ..... do you do all the instruments? Just curious.
I like the hell out of it and it will likely get saved to my permanent list of 'keepers' from the boards. Muy excellent.

And ...... we have genres we're supposed to confine ourselves to? I don't think so!

Wow! Cool tune! I really think the way it goes from the verse to the chorus is just pure excellence-ness.
Did you play all of these instruments yourself? Band?

Critique: I think the kick drum (at least in the verses) sounds just a little too loud). During the solo I definitely wanted to hear a louder, centered guitar take over (during both solo parts).

This song really does sound great. Good work, Rami!

Thanx a lot Lieutenant.

I'll definitely bring up the guitars, I just haven't had a chance to do a re-mix yet.

To answer your question, I'm playing everything. I cringe at the thought of actually working with someone else. :D

Thanx Mr. Cash. :)

I'm playing everything. I also think the kik might be a bit loud. I left it like that only because of the nature of the tune, I tought I could get away with a louder kik and drums in general for this one. But I'll give it a shot with a more sub-dued kik when I get around to re-mixing it.

I'll also try bringing up and centering the solos a bit, but I feel the same way about my soloing that I do about my voice. I'm kind of embarrassed to put them front and centre since they're not my strengths. The only thing I'm comfortable with is my drumming since it's really the only instrument I play well enough to be confident about.

Thanx for all the help. I'll try every suggestion given to me so far.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out if this is some kind of joke. Because if it's not, it's really really stupid.

I think there was some hullabaloo in another thread about not critiquing genres you're not familiar with. Or something. :)
I figure, if you love music, give some feedback.

Obviously, if I were a studio owner who only recorded funk, I'd probably be more qualified to give you advice on a funk mix.

My studio is really just me and a few local artists I work with on a consistent basis, so I really can only attest to the fact that I HAVE listened to some Parliament records in the past and can appreciate the sweet groove you just layed (laid? lay?) down.

I can "Play That Funky Music White Boy"....so I guess I'm allowed...

Sounded really good. I'd agree the guitars could come up a bit. The tone was fine to me. Loved the drum sound. Really tight playing. Liked the vocal effects in the chorus and the way it changes from verse to chorus.

Exactly. I listen to everything from Prince to Alice Cooper to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to James Brown to the Beatles. to Deep Purple to the Who. Nobody's going to tell me what I can give my opinion on.:D

Thanx Trip. Those guitars are definitely going to come up.
