Why yes Marshall is the best amp....
I have owned several different amp brands over the years, (mesa, peavey, laney, and marshall).
the only amp i have held onto over the years is my mesa nomad100 combo, but I have now had the marshall vintage modern for 2 or 3 years as well. and it depends on what I am going to play as to which amp i'm going to use (typically I use both for a show, the mesa for my cleans and the marshall for my dirt)
Does your vm rattle? every one I've tried sounds like it's got a bag of spanners inside it.![]()
you mean when you move it? yes it does rattle. but no rattleing when i'm playing it.
It depends on the sound you are after. If you want the sound of a Marshall, it's the best. If you want the sound of a Fender Twin, the Marshall sucks at it.
Let it also be said that there is not one 'Marshall sound". I've had several JCM800 100 watters and they all sounded different. Those sound different from the 900's and 2000's and the old 70's-era JMP's. To a certain extent, they all sound like Marshalls, but they don't sound like each other.
I saved up and bought a Marshall power brake (I think that's what it's called), and my amp tech, whom I respect a lot, told me he'd be installing a new transformer in my JCM800 if I used it. I tried it, and it really did sound like something was wrong and something bad was happening - maybe an extremely high pitched, balmy sounding scream for help, if you can imagine that. I stopped. I've been using the attenuator on other, much lower wattage amps, and it's fantastic on those. But the - 50 watt - JCM 800 will stay unattenuated.I was advised by my amp tech, in the last few days, that Marshalls and attenuators don't happily combine. He said he'd done quite a bit of work on Marshall post Brick/Tube Cube/powersoak etc use and they often end up causing problems with the transformer.
- so true. I think it's the transformers that are the primary determinant of the sound, because changing tubes doesn't seem to have much impact on the sound, at least with the JCM800. All the more reason not to use an attenuator (if you like the sound you're getting)Let it also be said that there is not one 'Marshall sound". I've had several JCM800 100 watters and they all sounded different.
