Hi folks, just new here, still trying to feel my way around! Just wondering about my TEAC X-3 that has a bit of an odd problem. When recording, its possible to have both VU's in sync, but during playback, the left channel VU meter falls back and cuts in and out (as if someone was turning the volume for the left channel up and down). Anyone else experience this problem/something similar?

Thanks in advance.

could be as basic as dirty heads. Could also be bad tape.
But for whatever reason it doesn't sound like it's getting a good signal all the way to the tape and what you're describing is how it might behave if the heads were dirty.

Could be other stuff too but start with that.

Hi Lt. Bob,

The problem is consistent with several different tapes. I will try cleaning the heads/capstan/rollers.

Is the problem audible, or are you only seeing it on the meter?

Hi all,

Sorry for not being more specific, the problem is also audible as well as visible on the VU meters.
