Feeding on Overhead

It really depends upon the type of music one is recording as well. A good kit and great tuning can't make a crappy metial drummer sound good on a jazz record. But you surely will have poor results by guessing a technique without trying it first. I have seen and tried ndividual cymbal micing in the past. I have not yet myself seen a benefit yet. If a kit sounds good in a room to begin with, there is just not a need to close mic cymbals. IME, it just makes crap sound crappier.

Um, actually, I think he was kidding about that.;) But if you get results you like, go for it!

And for the record, I was half kidding about recording them separately.

In point of fact, the best isolation you could ever get would be to record every drum separately, but for the reasons already stated, it is quite impractical.
