So I am having the same problem that many other people are and that is recording distorted guitar.

Recently I purchased the Presonus Audiobox USB recording System along with the Shure SM57 microphone. The only problem though is that the microphone isnt picking up the sound that well. For example if I set the Audiobox to 0db and record off of my amp through the Shure SM57 then it picks up almost no sound what so ever. So to try to fix this I just raised the Audiobox up to +15db, which you guessed it, gave me the volume but also gave me pure shit sound quality. So I guess what I'm wondering is if the mic is defective, if the audiobox is defictive, if I need to turn up the volume on my amp, or if there is anything else I can do to try and fix this problem.

Gear:Schecter Tempest with humbucker pickups.
Crate Half Stack(which is soon being replace by the Bogner Alchemist Half Stack, which if anyone has any opinion about the Bogner Alchemist I would love to hear it).
Shure SM57
Presonus Audiobox USB recording System
Boss GT-10 multi effects processor.

I have also tried directly plugging the Boss GT-10 into the Audiobox which works very well without distortion, but with Distortion does not sound very good at all. Also I dont think that the SM57 is a knock off because I purchased it at guitar center.

If anyone knows anything about the Presonus Audiobox and how to work it to its potential I would be happy to hear it. I am willing to accept any and all feedback and advice on this issue. I would also like to emphasize that I am a complete noob when it comes to recording music. I can post recordings of what the distortion sounds like if necessary.

For a start - when you adjust the gain with the control on the front panel of the Presonus, do you ever get the clipping light to come on? Shout into the mic as you turn it up. If the clipping light never comes on, then it might be a mic problem, as you say the Boss output to the Presonus produces useable volume.
Do you have another mic you can borrow to try, or a different cable?
Bring the mic back to where you bought it and have them plug it into one of their PA mixers or amps.

So I went ahead and tried it out and with my MXL 990, the clip light turns on at 0db but with the SM57 the clip light doesnt come on until I am basically yelling into the mic at about +15db. I'm not quite sure what this means.

it probably means there's something wrong with the mic or cable. Go take it to the store and have them put it thru a PA as mjb suggested.
