Hi there,

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong place or anything, im new to this forum and new to forums in general.

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in mastering a track I recorded, as I know very little about mastering. Ideally I would like a master for internet delivery and another for radio. The track is 'Ascension' on thomlambertaudio.moonfruit.com under the 'music portfolio' heading.

Unfortunately I cannot pay (I am a recent student just looking into gaining recording experience!), but I can offer the chance to get experience in return and, if the master is used, I will give recognition wherever the recording is sent or uploaded.

Thanks in advance!

Thom

LOL! You'll get that here. The first thing I noticed is the extreme left panning of the guitar in the beginning. It was a bit uncomfortable for me to listen to. That being said, I could do a unprofessional mastering for you but I would rather see you work the mix a bit more.

cheers Jimmy, I was aiming to create space with a wide mix but ill have another go at it. Any more suggestions?

I would at least carry some of the hard panned material to the opposite side to some degree. An easy smoothing of that would be to duplicate the track, delay the new track 10-15ms (or just move the waveform a bit later) and pan it the opposite direction. Not too loud, just enough to balance it out. Maybe try that on a few things in there. I have the ITB tools to master and would be willing to take a stab at it for free. WTH. I like the song. What DAW are you using?

I tend to agree about the guitar. It doesn't sound too bad on a set of speakers, but when I listened in my headphones it was a bit "unbalancing". Sort of a lopsided feeling with it. You could try double tracking it and panning the second track to the opposite side. Not necessarily all the way but enough to balance it a bit. Just make sure your second track is tight timing wise or it might make it worse. Hehe.

I'd certainly take a shot at "mastering" it though I don't truly have a mastering quality studio. Treated room and decent monitors, but not a whole lot of of high class outboard gear to use for it. I'll do it for the recognition and/or practice though!

Cheers!

As a matter of interest, is it unusual to master off of a CD as opposed to a file ?

Cool guys, I really appreciate the advice and the offers to master for me. I'll spend a bit of time with the guitars (probably at some point over the next couple of days) and then send the file to anyone who wants to give it a go! (Is that acceptable forum etiquette?!)

Thom

Yes, acceptable. Hell, send me your whole project file. I might just play with the mix in C6 and see how it turns out from a different perspective. PM me if interested. :D

Jimmy is the man. I would recommend him to anyone for mixing/mastering.

- Thom - you might want to post your mix in the Mixing clinic to get it a little more polished and ready for Mastering.
