I re-tracked the drums and vocals and rythm giotars to this earlier this week. But the guitar solos, bass and percussion tracks are about 5 years old. I'm not crazy about the guitar sounds, they're pretty "fizzy", but I did all I could with them and I don't feel like re-tracking them.

Let me know how the levels are. Especially the vocals. I listened to them solo'd for a long time right before mixing, so I can't get a good perspective of whether they're way too low or way too loud.

Thanx

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (Rolling Stones cover)

Coming from years of 'The Stones', hard to not hear it with pre expectations :D
Seems either too controlled, or not pumping enough?
With the vocal for example that might mean less comp, or more but slower attack, and level up. See what I mean?

Sounds good Rami.

The first vocal delay sounds a bit of to me, not by much but just a tad, perhaps half tempo, or less feedback would work.

I think the lead vocals could be a tad higher when the band comes in.
Also the huu, huu's (backing vocals could be a tad lower in volume compared to the main vox.

One side note, I'd like to hear a very short delay on the solo voice before the band comes in, less than 50ms. Kinda like a voice doubler.

Other than that it sounds well preformed, tight and funky as you always sound.

It sounds great to me Rami. I thought the "whoo, whoos" came in pretty well. Of course I love the hell out of your kick and snare sound!!! I like how the woman in the breakdown is yelling "Paint it black." Great add there!!!

Yeah, if you got that first vocal "Yeah" to be just a little left and the delay to come completely out of the right speaker like the original it would be cool, but I think it is fine as is.

Great cover dude. :D

The only thing I can offer RAMI is that it's clean - the playing & singing is ace, the mix is cool & I really enjoyed it. It's just missing multitrack tape mud - the stuff the Glimmer Twins caused by their inexperience. Mind you, I can't be sre that it's Glimmer era so I could be totally wrong with that. I've heard a few cleaned up "Mick Boy" "remasters" of stuff like Goat's head Soup & whilst they sound very clear'n'clean I miss the sound I was used to.

That's a nice imitation of Jagger!
Listening to my nearfield monitors the vocal is pretty much out front, through the Polks it's perfect.
The woo woos could be pushed back a bit for my taste, but of course, that's pretty subjective.
I don't hear the fizz on the guitars, they sound really good to me, and the drums are fantastic!

Nice work.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and review this and then listen to it.

Sounds nice Rami ........ like usual you have everything well balanced and sitting in the mix. A few oddities in the percussion but that's nit picking ........ nice job and nice performance though.

OK ..... now I'm gonna go listen to it and see how I did!

:D

yep ....... standard Rami ....... excellence is the nature of his game.

Sounds awesome! Just personal taste here, but I'd like a bit more verb on the vocals. Just a little.

Drums sound really great. I like the bit of "fizz" on the guitars. I think it suits the song pretty well.

Takes a sack to cover this one and I thought it pretty well done.

I agree with all those who think that technically the performance is spot-on excellent. But I also agree with Mixsit -- to me it sounds a bit too controlled. It's somehow too clean and "non-threatening". I'd prefer to have it pumping like a mofo -- the loundess wars have their place sometimes -- and dirtied up with some saturation or even a bit of hiss. And to have you breathing beer right in my face like a drunk at a midnight bus station.

Wow, i was feeling a little lonely there for a while. ..'till now anyway. :p:D

A real good recreation of the original. Loved the shakers. Loved the bass.

I'd probably like a little more "crunch" on the guitars. There's lot's of "space" in the mix. More crunch would fill things in a little.

I wonder what a double tracked vocal would sound like. I'd put more tracks of the "woo hoo" vocals in - fill 'em out.

I'd nudge up the level of the guitar solo.

Good overall balance, everything is exceptionally clear and detailed.

The vocal performance is really nice.

Drums and percussion really clean, maybe a little too much so. The cymbal in the guitar solo sounds like it's out there all by itself.

My only real criticism is the bass in the beginning. I dunno, sounds too processed, quantized, sequenced, too perfect - almost like a video game or something. Once the other instruments come it, it's a lot more tolerable, but still not quite 'human' enough.

Yo, Rami. On this one, I absolutely loved your drums. I have no idea what you did, but for some reason the drums on this one sound better to me than usual. Your kick packs some serious punch. Snare sounds awesome, too.

Great sounding mix, man.

Hey everyone, thanx a lot for the comments. I usually like to respond to each post individually, but I fell too far behind in this thread, there are already 15 posts.

I did do a re-mix after the first few posts and took some of the advice given (bringing up the lead vox, turning down the "ooh's", etc....).

Some of the nit-picks, I can't do anything about. I don't know how to make my drums not sound "too clean", for example. Also, the bass is just my bass played with a pick and plugged straight in. There are no sequencers or quantization going on, so it is what it is.

Thanx again for all the help and advice.

I think it sounds great. I don't know what all these weirdos are talking about. Shame on you for playing really tight and recording things well! :laughings:

Drums sound great. Is this that Sonor snare again? Nice pop to it. Everything sounds good to me. If this were my mix, I'd stick a fork in it.

I still wanna hear you do Back in the USSR. :D

Thanx man. Yeah, that Sonor snare. It doesn't have the same pop it had on the other tune, because I put a 0-ring on it for this tune. I needed to tame it a little bit. I also used the Sonor toms for this one.

Yeah, I figure that if the only criticism I get is about how things sound too clean, or that my playing is too tight, I'm not doing that bad.

Once we start getting into really specific things, like how much a compressor should be "pumping", I figure that means people were REALLY looking for something......:)

Sounds good,
Intro toms are not panned so wide like original I think but it's good thing, sure.
