hey guys
i recently bought a boss ds-1 distortion pedal but anytime i turn it on there is a real bad buzz from the amp?any idea what causes this?with the pedal off the amp sounds fine but hit the pedal and it buzzes really bad?i've fiddled around with the settings and seem to always get the same thing..is this normal as i am new to using distortion pedals i usually only used standard foot switches so i am only feeling my way through..the amp i use is a vox ac-15vr
many thanks
Tony

even when a DS-1 is working properly the distortion it creates could be mostly described as a really bad buzz.

But that does sound like something's broken. If you're using an AC adapter unplug it and put a batterry in the pedal just to check it out.
If it still buzzes ..... the problem's in the pedal.
If it doesn't .... then the problem's in the adapter or a groundloop between the adapter and the amp.

cables? Do you have the same problem with other guitars?
Or maybe too much gain? If you're connecting Boss to amp, don't use amp drive so much.

cheers guys ya its running off the adapter so i must see can i get a battery to fix it
i turned down the gain on my amp to about 2 and its still pretty bad
i messed around with the pedal itself and it still buzzes quite a bit..the distortion is good but the buzzing gets quite annoying!

hahaha jerk :p

honestly, i like the DS1. it takes a lot of muddy low end out and can give guitar a nice chugga-chugga sound..and if paired with another pedal (i pair it with my marshall guvnor which has an EQ) you can boost the low end and run some sick chuggy sounding gain.
i use the DS1 on my bass stack as well, gives it that extra punch live and in the mix.

as for that bad buzz, could be an AC adapter
or your pedal is just busted. go return it, unless its not under warranty? boss fixes pedals when ya send to them too, it's not THAT expensive..i had to get my DD3 fixed because it just wasn't outputting anything..guess something inside got busted...and it was outta warranty so it cost like 30 to fix i believe.....but at the same time, i got my DS1 for 40, so if you can get it that cheap, just buy a new one lol

Like everyone said, it may be broke, may be bad cables, may be ground loop. Remember though a distortion pedal is simply a preamp seriously overdriven so it amplifies anything put into it. Could even be your pick-ups are poorly grounded or badly shielded if at all. You may want to consider a noise gate pedal.
