Quiet background static in recording sometimes *Random*

I use Fraps to record Let's Plays on YouTube... I have 950+ Subscribers right now and that's just too much to make mistakes like this, which aren't my fault.

Sometimes I'll come on to record directly into the pink line in jack, and it records in Fraps along with the game's audio. Here's what I mean.

No static: YouTube - ‪Let's Play Castlevania SoTN 04 - Scylla, Underground Caverns‬‏

Static: YouTube - ‪Let's Play Castlevania SoTN 14 - Revisiting Olrox's Quarters‬‏

Notice they're the exact same game. Sometimes I'll restart my computer and the static will be gone. It used to happen maybe half the time and at random, moreso in certain games. But now it's ALL THE TIME in EVERY GAME. And it's really annoying me, since I need to release new videos every single day.

I've screwed around in the Realtek HD audio manager that's just a default for XP, and it hasn't really changed anything at all (in the Recording section). If I just turn up the recording volume of the Microphone, the static's volume will go up.

Please help, I'd really like to get this sorted out so I can get back to making quality videos instead of these ones with this background static.

PS: When I talk with my Microphone to other people, there's no static. I've also tried different recorders so it's not Fraps. It's just RECORDING with the microphone that's a problem. Any ideas?

what kinda mic you got. get a usb interface and a decent mic and it should solve your problem

Its a Cyber Acoustics AC 634
cheap 20 Dollar headset, uses a pink line-in port.

Thing is, I don't think it's the mic. Since I can talk to other people without static, and because it only has background static from recording. And because it only happens 50% of the time.

Your probably correct its not the mic its your sound card which isnt designed for recording. get an interface and a real mic and you wont have this problem

Because that's what it's designed to do. It's not designed for voiceovers. You're recording background noise, simple as that, that's what the "static" is. The hum of your computer, your furnace, your fridge, etc all run through a shitty mic into a shitty input.

I think that would be the explanation if it happened all the time. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. Hell I thought I fixed the problem yesterday. Turn on my computer today and nope. Now there's static in my recordings again. There's nothing in my room that makes noise either.

More annoying than the static is the rumble. Try putting a high pass filter on your vox to get rid of the low-end pops.

Thanks everyone. I think I found the problem
I updated my sound card and now when I play the footage I hear no static... the exact same footage that was already saved and had static before I updated my card. I guess my speakers just played the audio wrong?

Weird...
Well if it's not really the problem I'll post some more in this thread.

Well it doesn't matter anymore though because my mic is now pretty much broken and records VERY quietly, and so I'd have to pump up the volume insanely high in Sony vegas, which will just make the natural static loud.

Would this be a good headset?
Logitech USB Headset (H530) : Headsets & Mics - Best Buy Canada
It seems really nice for what I need. I don't want a desktop mic because they're too sensitive

Well if your going USB one is as good as an other ..... I think?

Have you looked into the Blue Yeti?

Yeah I heard all USBs are pretty much the same because they're not dependent on sound cards. Which makes sense because it's a USB and not a line in.
But I don't want desktop Microphones: My computer is on the floor so I have no desk. It's also outta my budget haha.

(Computer on floor, "Outta my budget. Making myself look poor lol)

Maybe you should invest in a desk so that you have less chance of tripping and breaking equipment!

Lol I actually enjoy sitting on the floor better. I just lay down on a cushion, which is awesome because I don't like sitting in a chair.

But even if I got a desk, which I do have one it's just downstairs, it would not fit in my room. I'm an aspiring herpetologist, and my room is filled with reptiles and fish. Lots of glass tanks. And a TV, Xbox, dresser, bed, shelves, and a couch.

But my mic broke because
1: It's about 5 years old
2: It's only a $20 headset.

So you have that much stuff in your room and theres no background noise? hard to believe fish takes and what not make noise

It has no filter on it. I'm more a supporter of "Let it be like it's in it's natural habitat."

Had the same fish for two years.

But yeah, nothing else makes noise.

You'd be surprised what microphones can pick up :)

Yeah, all that junk that humans filter out.

But I'm getting a new mic anyways, because I'm tired of using this one lol
