Are interfaces such as the Fast Track and the Fast Track Pro any good?
I have a laptop running Vista 32-Bit, and will be running a Shure Sm57 through the interface.

I would say they are a reasonable start.
I have used both and I'm not a fan of the basic fast track but the fast track pro is OK IMO with usable pre amps to get you started and a good amount of connection options.
If you are just starting at recording basic stuff then this kind of interface will not get in the way of OK results

I just set up a new Windows 7 laptop for a friend, and I had him buy a FastTrack Pro. It worked perfectly (once I downloaded the 64-bit drivers) and sounds great. Nice piece of kit for a very reasonable price. One reason I like M-Audio is they are always on top of drivers when a new OS comes out.

For the price, the fasttrack Pro is super nice.

I just bought a M-Audio Fast Track Pro and I like it a lot. Its a great piece of equipment for the dollar amount. What do you intend on recording through your 57? I've been using it with my Sennheiser e609 to mic my guitar amp and it works great.

I used to work with Delta 1010LT cards and liked them. I'm now using the ProFire2626...again like the M-audio stuff.

I've always had really good luck with M-Audio stuff. And really bad luck with Presonus everything.

They always seem to get a bad rap for interfaces..I think maybe the fast track was duff dunno

All I do know is that Ive tried a few interfaces but I still use an m-audio omni i/o plugged into a quattro...I love how its a mini mixer, the headphone amp is crystal clear and the preamps (which I think were the DMP3 forerunners) sound excellent to me

dunno when or if Ill upgrade it...its a bit unstable to set up but pretty rock solid after that..I even bought another as a back up...so much for modern technology

I had a ProjectMix I/O. It is a great controller, but I thought it's pre-amps were poor.

Now that Pro Tools 9 can use any brand interface, I don't plan on using M-Audio hardware any more. I sold the ProjectMix, and bought a Mackie Blackbird and a TC Electronics Impact Twin.

I use one as well, like it a lot.

I have a keystation 88 pro as well. Great for a cheap full weighted key controller.

The Delta series are muddy and lifeless IMO, the entry level Monitors are horrible, for another $100.00 you get something 10 times better. Havent used anything else, but apparently they get good reviews.

This short article, accompanying video, and support files let you compare multi-track recordings of a small group made using a state of the art Lavry converter versus my ten year old M-Audio Delta 66:

Converter Comparison

We also ran all the tracks through a $25 SoundBlaster sound card. Please let us know which mix was made from which tracks. Thanks.

Lol, not interested, did my own comparison. Focusrite Saffire blew the Delta away on my system and thats all that matters to me, I'm not an audiophile engineer, just a hobbyist with his own opinion. If you think M-Audio Delta(s) stand up to "state of the art" interfaces knock yourself out.

yup its what counts to your ears that matters...some folks love KRKs some dont..I love my m-audio delta series, Im sure others sound better but its never left me wanting so far..

Use an M-Audio Firewire 1814. Have absolutely no complaints, only issue is the odd hiccup here or there that is quickly resolved with a reboot of the interface :)
