Pro Tools WITHOUT proprietary software...???

I'm sure this question has been asked before...

but I'd like to use Pro Tools on Windows XP without having to purchase an proprietary hardware. I don't care if it's an older version...I just want the software.

so...

1) is this possible ?

2) if so...are available versions so watered down that it's not practical ?

You can get away with not using a Digidesign "interface" , but its still expensive; you gotta get a Mbox 2 Micro, record audio with a daw like Ableton with your interface of choice, bounce to wav, then import to pro tools. Another viable option is M-Powered.
 
Digidesign uses the interfaces as a copy protection dongle.
This is not only to keep kids from trading ProTools warez files,
but also to keep quality control over what people use with the program
so they know how to fix problems and what causes crashes/problems.

If you dont want to spend the money, use something OTHER than ProTools that doesn't care what interface is connected.
Reaper www.reaper.fm is only $60.

thanks all...

I actually need a good 8 channel preamp...so if I went w/ an m-audio ProFire 2626...(& got Pro Tools in that manner)...I would still have to clock it thru my Lynx Aurora 8/AES16. The Lynx allows an S/MUX expansion card called the LT-ADAT as an L-Slot; & then the ProFire 2626 would be connected & slaved thru that (the Lynx).

so...would ProTools recognize a connection of this type...???

& would I be able to use it to then record everything coming in from the Lynx ?

Pro Tools would only ever "see" the Profire2626.

It would however see the Profire 2626's ADAT inputs/outputs which presumably your lynx could connect to.

You can also clock the Profire2626 externally using either the word clock input or the ADAT ins.

It is worth noting that with Pro Tools M-Powered (and indeed LE) you can only use 18 inputs and 18 outputs at any one time.

here's another quick question:

one of my mastering clients was asking me over the phone the other day, what would happen in HIS case? He is running a Digi003 rack; & Pro Tools, on a Mac lap top. He wants to continue using Pro Tools...but he also wants to now add a Sytek preamp & an Apogee converter...[& record thru those].

can he do it...???

if so...how should he go about implementing it...???

Pro Tools 9 is unlike any previous version in having no proprietary hardware requirement, allowing use of the software with any interface. It can operate using the internal sound card of a PC via the ASIO driver and a Mac using Core Audio

The previous versions of pro tools software would not function without a proprietary interface connected,but Pro Tools 9 throws off that shackle, and while still functioning with Avid/Digidesign hardware, the software now supports any Core Audio or ASIO interface, including approved notebook computers.
 
in the vintage pro tools, original hardware could be used with a number of different DAW programs (including Deck and Digital Performer)

Indeed but I don't think it'll work with XP!
