I want to setup a decent budget home studio for my room..

I was just going to get a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra, but after reading some review. I am shying away from that.

I will need some interface, software, etc.. Basically starting with nothing but monitors. I am willing to buy used equipment also to save money. Looking to spend $500 (is it attainable with this amount) or around there.

Help!

Oh and this will be going to a PC.

Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 Quad Core 2.6ghz
4GB RAM
320GB Hard Drive 7200rpm
USB/FIREWIRE equipped..

Thanks in advance!

Well to start out google up and down load Reaper as your recording software.
It's a free FULL demo, and if you like it, total cost $40.

so check on the software.. looks like reaper is pretty sweet. Just downloaded and messed around. Sufficient enough for my use.

Adobe Audition is another option you may also consider looking into and if you need a fairly straight up colorless external preamp the DMP3 is also worthy of consideration.

I have the option to pick up an maudio 2626 for 350. Would that be all I need? I kinda like the maudio 610 too..

How deep are your pockets? This is an expensive hobby, kinda like fly fishing is when you finally figure out that you really need to invest in that $1000 fly rod that you can't afford.

If you have to ask how much it's gonna cost you.....you can't afford it.

There is a lot of stuff to cover, I'd suggest that you have a look at this series on cheap multitrack recording which might help. It was written for people looking to do their own recording at home, so might just be what you need.
In particular, there's some info here on recording interfaces
and also here which covers recording software
which I hope are useful to you.

Hope this answers your question, have a nose through the newbie forum too, lots of people ask similar questions :)
