I realize this may be an uber repeated question, but I've done several searches through the forums and can't find anyting more specific than EQ settings or 'aggressive vocals'. I wanted to be very clear what I'm looking for:

A mic that will handle the above mentioned types of singing. Also, here are some band example:

as I lay dying
Parkway Drive
August Burns Red
Underoath
Killswitch Engage
Atreyu

If you've listened to any of these bands, you'll get the diversity in a mic I'm looking for. These guys scream, shout, sing, talk. So to me, it seems I would need a solid mic that can cover the full spectrum other than maybe maria carry/christina agulera highs. I also may one day need the mic for live performing, assuming my bands idea works, so handheld capability would be nice.

What would be a good mic for this under $500. Also, is there a specific stand I should go for while recording.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

I assume it's for recording, right??

I'd probably go with a Shure sm7b. Although with a $500 price range, I'm sure there's plenty of other suggestions.

Recording for now, could turn into live, in which case it would then be handheld.

Borrow or rent different mikes and experiment with them to see what works well for you. I don't think that there are any shortcuts here. :)

for $500 you could get the sm7b and sm58 for live since you don't want to damage a more expensive one at a metalcore/hardcore/aggressive show. I've been to a number and I would not want to take a sm7b to one of those shows...in fact I played in hardcore/metal band for a lot of years (then I grew up and started making music!) :)

If it were me that's what I'd do with $500 for live and recording.

Yeah, good stuff AC!

Hardcore metal band live? Use a Shure green bullet! ;)

Another for the SM7b. Hard to beat (at any price).

I just noticed you mentioned Underoath...funny story (and related)...

Years ago I played a show with them and we set up my SM58 for all the singers, and the dude from Underoath demolished the mic when he was getting pretty intense and accidently let it fly, smashing against the wall. We pulled one of my SM57s to cover the rest of the show...it remained intact. Cool guys though.

So, don't take an expensive mic to a show like that...the bands you open for may destroy it. Which brings me back to SM7B for the studio, SM58 for the road.

Nice! I just saw their clean vocalist perform with his side project (well, now his main band) a few months ago!

Yeah, The Almost is really good too. I've got a ginger friend who looks just like him.

Beyer M88 or a Sennheiser 421 works too, then u can throw them on your guitar cab.
