Hi guys, I' m new in this forum and I'd like to ask something about my homerecording project! Well, I' ve a room, whose misures are nearly 4m x 3m, where a decided to start recording my new album (I Hope so, we haven't started yet :D ). I' m the drummer, but i' m also going to play accordion and piano on this recording so I need some help about all of them. I have a quite good microphones set (7 microphones) in order to record drums, a shure sm-57 for eletric guitars and acoustic instruments and an old panoramic mic. Moreover we use M Audio mobilepre With protools SE and studiomaster mixer 16 channels!
Before starting with the questions I underlines that we play Metal, so consider it in your answer ;)

Let's start:

1)DRUMS : my idea is to use this setting:
-Each mic of the set placed on the tom or snare it's thought to be
-The firts cardioid between two crashes, the second one between ride
and china
-Sm57 on hi-hat
-Panoramic mic quite far away
is it a good setting?

2)ELETRIC: -Where shall we put the sm57 to have a powerful sound?
GUITAR -Good settings on the amp?

3)ACOUSTIC: -shall we use the sm57 or the cardiod?
GUITAR

4)ACCORDION:-shall we use the sm57 or the cardiod?

5)PIANO:-shall we use the sm57 or the cardiod?

6)SYNTH: -I'm going to use protools virtual instruments, is it a good choice?
-Which sound library shall we use?

8)BASS: -Can we use the bass drum mic?

9)VOCALS: -shall we use the singer's mic or another one?

10)CHOIRS: -How can we record them?I'm asking this because we don't have enough
headphones...ideas?

Thank you guys :D

Ok, first of all.....
i' m also going to play accordion and piano on this recording........ we play Metal

Next....

No not at all. Read up on drum micing techniques, because this ain't one of them. You need to learn about overhead configurations, etc....

ELETRIC: -Where shall we put the sm57 to have a powerful sound?
Not trying to be a smart-ass, but the answer to that is "wherever it sounds best". You need to experiment.
GUITAR -Good settings on the amp?
Same answer as above.

The next few questions after that, I can't answer because if I did, I'd just be repeating myself

VOCALS: -shall we use the singer's mic or another one?
Dude, seriously, what kind of a question is that. You don't even tell us what your singer's mic is.

Read this, and be enlightened.

Tweak's Guide to the Home and Project Studio

When it comes to recording, it's great to ask questions, but sometimes you just have to figure some stuff out by playing around with it, such as amp settings, mic placement, and which sound library to use.

Good luck

ACCORDION:-shall we use the SM57 or the cardioid?

What ever you use you will need two microphones one for each side of the accordion for both sides sound ans are very different from each other. ;)

The Shure SM57 is a dynamic cardioid mic. Asking of one should use "the SM57 or the cardioid" makes no sense. Perhaps you meant to ask whether to use an SM57 or a condenser of some sort? I'm going to guess that by panoramic mic you mean stereo mic, yes?

Welcome to HR. You're in the right place. You should concentrate on one question at a time. RAMI is correct in that a lot of this stuff depends on the talent, the room, and the instruments - how does it sound to you?

Yeah i'm sorry i wrote it wrong, it's a condenser ;) I think it's a stereo mic, I'm Italian so I don't know the correct translation, sorry :D

We play a strange kind of metal :D
Well, about singer's microphone I don't know exactly the model, I'm going to tell you tomorrow, but it's really good!

That's "cardiod" Moresound. Don't you know anything? And you can't use an accordion for metal, unless you also have a crumhorn and a Viola de Gamba.-Richie

hello i just joined this forum..and its very interesting..

If you have strong constitution, it's really a great place.
I'm still getting my head around "we play metal" and "accordian". Zydeco Metal?? It cound happen.

Hi. I am new to recording and I was wondering...What should I have for breakfast if I am planning on recording some yodeling with my Death/Polka band?

Not sure about breakfast foods...but I think there's some exercises you can do to loosen up the throat.

Google "Linda Lovelace"....

I think I should tell you something about the band ;) well, it's a mix of melodic black metal (only in few parts) and classical music (a sort of mix between chopin, mozart and beethoven...well, I' m not so good :D ), but also some folk (here's the accordion). That's it, trust me ;)
