Hello names Costas and I ran into a little bit of an issue tonight exploring in Pro Tools. I had a vocal track and it needed a bit of leveling and whatnot but the beginning of it did not pop or make any noises it was clear. Keep in mind I have made a save as session at this point before playing at all. So i clicked the pencil tool and zoomed all the way in. I started playing with the lines and saving as I was going along after a little bit I listened back and I had these nasty pops and clicks, before long i realized I couldnt undo. Is there anyway for me to get this back or am I screwed and have to redo it. Any help and advice would be great! And also what is the correct way to chop pops and breaths and clips out of audio tracks! Thanks!!

Seriously ..... try not to have them in the first place. work your microphone placement and practice good microphone technique.

Pops, and clips should be avoided while tracking, but breaths are kinda part of it all.

If you really want to get rid of the breaths, you could always use a technique made famous by Tay Zonday on "Chocolate Rain." Brilliant!!!

Watch & learn. (almost 64 million views, need I say more?)

Redrawing waveforms destructively alters the file. In other words permanently changes the file. By pops for you mean plosives like letters "p" and "k" causing a blast of wind to hit the mic? If so expirement with different mic posistions and use a pop filter if you don't already. If you mean pops and clicks caused by punching in then try to make your edits where they don't cause them in the first place. Zoom in to pencil level and try to make your splice points where the wave crosses the zero axis and then use crossfades. Of course I don't practice what I preach, haha. I had clicks all over my guitar tracks from where I punched in. I took the pencil and tried to get the waves to match up from one region to the other... if that's makes sense. Keep in mind that we're dealing with fractions of a millisecond here and you aren't going to noticably damage the sound. But I use protools 8 and if I redraw a waveform and the click is still there, I'm able to undo it.... so I just canceled out the first two sentences of my post :drunk:

Is it on my end or is that video just all color squiggly lines?
Yeah what is that? Lately I'll get maybe one normal play on UToob, then the vid goes.

I see two questions.. First how did you get into it (so far) that you couldn't hear the problems, yet couldn't undo? That's odd..
2nd, I guess there's things you can do with trying to draw things out with a pencil tool, but frankly I'd just go with automation lines.. (flat level reductions, fade slopes, down to the micro level if need be, and most likely gain automation pre compression by the way.
..Basically the dif I guess is keeping out of wave shaping' and in with a bit more of the integrity of the original.

Clicks on punches.. Does your rig not alow clip slip edit with drag-a-fade tool where you can do a ms or so of ramp?
..back to 'why pencil tool again. :)

yup, punch in and redo that section. For vocals I'll do at least 4 takes and cut and paste to make one good one (pretty common technique). Chances are you won't pop on all of them in the same place, so you'll have something to cut and use. If you do pop in the same spots it's going to come down to your technique and redoing the track. Editing them out after the fact probably won't give you what you want.

Lol.

1: "Do a ms or so of ramp?" I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but it sounds handy!

2: No I don't think my rig allows it...

..Sonar
..Hover over the top end of the clip and it makes a fade tool, drag makes a fade curve. Hold center edge for a straight slip edit, somewhere else you get edit with a fade.
Mostly I use the regular clip envelopes though on punches 'cause it'll likely want a gain trim anyway then go ahead and do custom shapes.. (probably slower, but old habits and all :D

Ohhh, yeah Pro Tools offers that but I can't get it to work. Says there isn't enough info in the regions to make the fade or something.

Hmm how long are the clips you're trying to fade in/out. If they are 2 seconds fading won't help much.

What moresound said, prevent them from happening in the first place.

For plosives I use Audio Suite to apply an HPF over the offending portion. For breaths I just edit the block.
